OK I desperatly need to loose weight.

Have been given xenical by GP but today so far I have taken 10 laxatives.

Not sure if that tiny amount will do anything but will increase the amount if I need too.

Not sure really why I decided to post here, I know it's stupid but I really really need the weight off fast for me to have an operation I need.

Crisps are a huge downfall for me but I feel I am eating less ans less daily but dont feel any thinner iykwim

the laxatives won't help you lose weight. I really wouldn't take them unnecessarily - if you take them long term then they could affect how your bowel functions. have you only just started taking the laxatives, or is this a long-seated habit. keep a record of what you eat; so at least you honestly know whether you are eating less and less.

SorenLorensen · 11/02/2006 19:54

I think taking laxatives is just likely to make you ill and dehydrated. And if your GP finds you are not using the Xenical properly - ie., with a low fat diet, they will stop prescribing it. If you stick to a healthy, low-fat diet and get some exercise you will lose weight fast - especially at first, and especially as I am guessing you are very overweight (or you wouldn't have been prescribed Xenical). Please don't think I'm nagging or having a go at you - I'm not, I know how hard it is. I think you need more help - can your GP sort you out with a dietician? One of my friends lost 9 stone with the help of a dietician based at her GP practice.
Or you could try a plan like WeightWatchers or SlimmingWorld - one where you go to a weekly class and get lots of support.
You know you need to do this - and there is support to help you. Please don't take any more laxatives.

If you can afford it, doing Slimfast is meant to be pretty effective.

Furball · 11/02/2006 20:01

Well you know yourself, what you're doing is dangerous. You need to take stock at whats going on and stop the thinking of taking more laxitives.

Whats wrong with taking the xenical and following a healthy low fat diet? Surely thats got to be a fairly quick way especially if you throw in a bit of exercise. If crisps are a downfall, don't have them in the house. I know it's not the same as crips but snack on apples or little cherry tomatoes or carrot, they can be quite satisfying.

Please think about the damage you could do to yourself by misusing laxitives.

Thanks ladies and I appreciate your comments.

I do feel like a silly girl really but also feel like there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

I say I have quite a fair diet(albeit the crisps

Before starting on the xenical I had to see the dietician I was 2.5 stone over weight with 2 stone left to loose- well just under 2 stone.

I dont suppose I have really thought about the long term affects of the laxatives but I only took the 1st 10 about 1.5 hours ago. Suppose I will be pooing for quite a bit and poo all those calories out too.

I walk a lot and if I am honest don't really understan how I am the size I am. But even if the extra use of laxatives till I get down in weight a bit it will be worth it I think.

Call me stupid if you like I will agree with you, if huby finds out fcuk I am in deep shit(no pun intended)

but you won't be pooing any extra calories out!

Mazzystar · 11/02/2006 20:13

i have struggled to lose my baby weight - actually to be fair haven;t struggled enough - but i have found in the past that walking is good for allround health and maintaining weight loss, but you need to up the exercise a bit, with some harder work cardio and maybe some weights to accelerate weight loss. If you went to gym say twice a week, or ran round park, bet you would notice huge difference in 6 weeks.

(mental note to self, must try taking own advice)

mummytosteven · 11/02/2006 20:14

not the most authoritative of sources, but here's an explanation of why laxative abuse doesn't work to lose weight:

this

Mazzystar · 11/02/2006 20:14

oh and just don't BUY any crisps.

Furball · 11/02/2006 20:14

It might be worth keeping a food diary. Maybe quantities and portion size should be looked at as well.

You could always join us Here if you need a kick up the jacksy. I can't talk I've only lost 3lbs since the beginning of the year, but we had our first stone losses this week. Hows that for some inspiration!

mummytosteven · 12/02/2006 10:13

bump.

NomDePlume · 12/02/2006 10:16

Isn't using laxatives abit like shutting the stable door once the horse has bolted ? Surely by the time your food gets digested down to the 'poo' stage then your body has already absorbed the fat and nutrients from it ? So all you are doing is increasing the rate at which you get rid of the useless waste ?

WigWamBam · 12/02/2006 10:26

NDP is right - your body will still take the calories and fat from the food so purging with laxatives does nothing to help weight loss. Any initial loss will be water, and will go back on again the first time you eat or drink.

Have a look at this to see the real damage that laxative abuse can cause.

fireflyfairy2 · 12/02/2006 10:33

Wouldn't it be better for you to get into a healthy eating routine and make it part of your life?

What will happen after you have your operation and you have no goal to still be slim for? IME if you start healthy eating then it's part of your life, less chance of a weight gain, and you know, you still can eat crisps, just low fat ones, or snack-a-jacks? You might need a kick start and some support, how about a group thing? Like Weight Watchers? Thet would be a good start for you, as it can teach you how to eat healthily and help you understand about weight loss in a positive way... throw the laxatives in the bin, or save them for someone with constipation!!

Hulababy · 12/02/2006 10:37

Keep a food diary. Write down exactly what you eat and drink, and how much - every single item! I find that I can only diet propery if I keep a record.

I post, when dieting, my food diary online. It really helps as others can see areas where you might be going over and having too much. Easier for an outsider to see this at times I find. But you have to be completely honest.

Have you tried things like weight watchers or slimming world?

The laxatives are really not going to help.
