How to revamp curtains?

WE're moving soon and I want to take our curtains with us (I've checked- they do fit). They're both floor length ones in a cream/beige colour to do a normal window and a patio door. I'm fed up with boring beige though and would like to revamp them without dying them- is there any way of doing this? I'd like to buy some yummy silky material and use it as well as current ones but am not very creative . Could I buy some of the 'hooks' (can't remember what they're calles) and hang at each side of the window then drape the silk sup, over and down the other side? Or is there some other way I could layer them?

I don't want to just have silky ones as we like curtians that block the light/cold/heat/ whatever out and they wouldn't be thick enough. PLus current ones match the suite, rug etc...

I don't want to use them as nets/voiles as I love daylight flooding in and may get blinds anyway (if I find people are looking in- not used to having main room at front of the house!). I would hopefully get enough fabric to make matching cushions as well...

ANy advice would be so much appreciated

(Hope this makes sense)
