Trying to come up with something new for our xmas drinks party - I love making (and eating) them. Things I like/usually make:

Duck & Hoisin Sauce & spring onion & cucumber pancakes
Mini yorkshire puds with roast beef and horseradish
Mini pitta breads and hummus
Little sausages wrapped in bacon
Smoked salmon & watercress on brown bread
Pastry shell things (bought) filled with cream cheese and roasted peppers
Mini Mince Pies

I know there are more but I can't remember them right now.

Would like some new ideas, pref things that can be substatially made in advance and then thrown together on the morning.

Bet you lot will come up with some superb ideas!

Olives stuffed with red chillis and almonds from M&S, a bit pricey as a small jar is 2.99 and I can eat a whole jar preparing dinner!

We had some great ones last Friday at the Great Eastern Hotel, tiny burgers in buns, no bigger than a 50p coin, Chinese spoons with minced raw fish and soome avocadoey thing.
Filo wrapped giant prawns, duck and goose livers soaked in brandy on a crouton, tiny thai fish cakes, tiny salmon on croute, cuuried chicken on nan, sushi and sashimi are my favourite everytime.

Trouble is as they are so tiny you eat loads of them and then can't face dinner!

I like the tomato and vodka idea!

OK, dont all laugh, but I actually bother to make filo pastry tartlets (use 5cm squares of filo pastry and press into a mini muffin tin then bake for 6 minutes) - make them a week ahead and keep in an airtight container.

Then I fill them with sliced duck breast and a dollop of chutney.

Feel free to take the p**s but I do like cooking, I can't help it.

Mini Gougeres Bourguignonnes: you can make in advance and freeze, then warm in the oven and serve hot, they're delicious!
recipe:
1/4 litre water
80g butter
125g flour
4 eggs
1 pinch salt
pepper
150g gruyere cheese (grated) + a piece of gruyere of about 50g cut in very small cubes

Put water, salt and butter in pan and heat until butter melted. Turn heat off and put flour in pan in one go, mix furiously until dough stops sticking to pan. Then add eggs one by one, mixing well. Finally, add the grated gruyere.
Turn the oven on (190C).
Put small spoonfuls of the cheesy choux pastry on a pastry sheet, and put small cubes of gruyere on top of each choux. Cook for 30 minutes in the oven. Eat hot or cold. Freezes v well.
I also make small puff pastry canapes with prawns and sweet chilli sauce on. Also love Nigella's pea and garlic crostini (in How to Eat if you have it). let me know if you want the recipe.
Wish I was invited to your party, sounds fun!!!

I've realised that ds' diet is a bit of a canape fest right now. So why not try Annabel's finger food section? Bang Bang Chicken and pinwheel sandwiches?

Crunchie · 27/11/2003 20:41

I did the best one for last new years eve, so good I ate nearly the whole plateful!!

Packet of mini popadoms, tub of nice tzatiki (total one is thick and gloopy enough), pack of cooked peeled king prawns. Popadom, dopplop Tzatski, Prawn, sprinkle with black pepper and chopped corriander to fancy up the platter!!

CountessDracula · 27/11/2003 20:47

Yum Crunchie!
