Trying to come up with something new for our xmas drinks party - I love making (and eating) them. Things I like/usually make:

Duck & Hoisin Sauce & spring onion & cucumber pancakes
Mini yorkshire puds with roast beef and horseradish
Mini pitta breads and hummus
Little sausages wrapped in bacon
Smoked salmon & watercress on brown bread
Pastry shell things (bought) filled with cream cheese and roasted peppers
Mini Mince Pies

I know there are more but I can't remember them right now.

Would like some new ideas, pref things that can be substatially made in advance and then thrown together on the morning.

Bet you lot will come up with some superb ideas!

Big bowl of dip with lots of fresh raw vegetables on the side: cucumber, carrot, peppers, babycorn, etc...

Thomcat you usually make lovely sounding food, have you got any ideas?

Hi Drac - tbh - the things you listed first off are the things I do. How about home toasted almonds, smoked salmon with lumpfish or caviar on top of sour cream and on a blini, chicken satay sticks with peanut sauce oh and don't forget the all time classic of cheddar cheese cubes and pineapple!!!!!!!!!!!

Blu · 27/11/2003 15:14

Vegetarian and served hot, and v v easy:
Par boil parnips, in finger-food size chunks, roll in oil, roll in polenta flour which is highly seasoned with cumin, black pepper, garam marsala, bit of chilli, (anything you fancy,) roast.Could all be done in advance except roasting.

Little savoury hot 'muffins' made with savoury corn-bread recipe (really easy to make, and you can spice it up)

Northerner · 27/11/2003 15:15

Pringles?

CountessDracula · 27/11/2003 15:17

Ooooh yes Northerner, I could serve them with toasted whippets nipples on a flatcap

God that's a mouthful.

Northerner · 27/11/2003 15:19

Try saying that after a couple of bottles of blue nun!

oliveoil · 27/11/2003 15:19

My favourite recipe is:

  1. Go to Sainsbury's/M&S
  2. Sift several boxes of party food into cool trolley.
  3. Purchase quickly.
  4. Heat oven
  5. Eat

Sounds complicated but can work just as well with any other ingredient such as Asda, Tesco etc.

CountessDracula · 27/11/2003 15:19

Hmm good point. Could cut into wedges?

CountessDracula · 27/11/2003 15:20

Oliveoil I am always disappointed in the bought ones, they just don't taste good.

And I LOVE making them, reminds me of helping my mum at their xmas drinks parties!

OP posts:
dsw · 27/11/2003 15:28

I don't eat eggs but my mum always used to make devilled eggs:
Hard boil some eggs.Cool and Cut in Half, scoop out yolks, mix with finely grated cheddar cheese and mayonnaise, then fill egg whites with mixture.

Ps/ When is the party!!!

CountessDracula · 27/11/2003 15:29

Oh yes good idea, usually do a few quails eggs too so may do those instead.

14 December

Pork scratchings?

boyandgirl · 27/11/2003 15:31

I love those really naff things stuck on cocktail sticks stuck into oranges! The presentation is so twee and pretty - what about modern canapes presented in an old-fashioned way?

Peppadews stuffed with Philadelphia cheese (or curd cheese, or whatever soft cheese you prefer).
Dolmas (dolmades? not sure what they're called), stuffed vineleaves - you can buy them in tins from ethnic shops so there's virtually no prepartion.

CountessDracula · 27/11/2003 15:32

Ah yes good idea re the vine leaf thingys. I do sometimes do cheese & pineapple sticks stuck in a grapefruit wrapped in foil!!! I just love cheese & pineapple together

Lou you will have to do better than that I'm afraid

Northerner · 27/11/2003 15:32

CD - do you not have staff to arrange party food?!

dsw · 27/11/2003 15:34

Northener Do You?

Northerner · 27/11/2003 15:37

dsw - no I dont! I was joking.

CountessDracula · 27/11/2003 15:37

Northerner I like doing it myself! (hmmm, makes note to hire canape maker to complement existing staff)

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 27/11/2003 15:38

It's OK DSW I do have rather a lot of staff and don't mind having the p*ss taken about it!!!
