NotQuiteCockney · 08/02/2006 21:56

I did it, but I gave up job when I had DS1.

Is this the new plan, move to the country, give up your job and go mad?

iota · 08/02/2006 21:56

I did, but I still work freelance for the company I left. I gave up big salary, benefits etc but still earn a half decent amount for someone who works in her 'spare time'.

At the moment I've got no work on and although I should be enjoying it, I'm bored out of my brain!

CountessDracula · 08/02/2006 21:58

you felt big and fat iota?

Me. Feel much happier (but a lot poorer for it). Mind you I think an accidental PG was subconsciously just the excuse I was waiting for to jack in a career that just didn't suit me in the slightest.

CountessDracula · 08/02/2006 21:58

that is my plan to do some stuff from home and still earn good money but have to moved based on that not happening as may not

Busy but relaxed and fullfilled, if a little brain dead sometimes. It's a major shift and I found it took a while to get used to the reduced income, but it was great to eliminate the stress caused by the conflict of two worlds (mothering and career).

handlemecarefully · 08/02/2006 22:00

I had a well paid -ish(?) job (£43,000) pro rata but only doing 25 hours....and have given it up. Depends upon what you think is well paid, some people might consider that trifling.

Fine with it - but then dh does okay too iyswim

CountessDracula · 08/02/2006 22:01

Is quite a lot more than that, same as dh in fact

I went from big bucks at Goldmans to staying home. The cash thing was fine. Actually, it was fine, all in all. But I didn't really love what I was doing before. Too stressful.

CountessDracula · 08/02/2006 22:01

(that is one of the probs we will be losing half income!)

Love being a sahm, although I do a bit of freelance work from home occasionally. It is relentless, being at home with two toddlers but mostly I can't believe how lucky I am to be able to decide on a whim what we all do. Or don't, as the mood suits. Of course there's a tiny bit of me that misses being able to spend a fortune on crap from SpaceNK and Harvey Nicks but my skin hasn't actually shrivelled up and dropped off without it

CountessDracula · 08/02/2006 22:02

Yes I remember you were Goldmans...

However remember that I spend thousands a month on childcare/staff so that will mainly go (apart from cleaner lOL)

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 08/02/2006 22:03

Oh no will I have to give up SpaceNK???

OP posts:
handlemecarefully · 08/02/2006 22:03

Ah yes, half of your income down the swanney - that's a lot. We perhaps lost only 20% or so of ours, probably less when you factor in child care costs

carefulnow · 08/02/2006 22:05

need to ask self how much money you really need to be happy

PrincessPeaHead · 08/02/2006 22:07

hello.
I'm happy!
but I keep having babies in order not to feel like a spare part once they are all at school....
think you need another one

handlemecarefully · 08/02/2006 22:07

CD - I guess in what must be a big hitter type job such as yours long hours come with territory and part time or flexible working just isn't an option

Feistybird · 08/02/2006 22:07

I will watch this carefully - I convince myself constantly that I could give up my job and not miss it, but have been working on here till 9:45, since kids went to bed at around 8 (as well as the usual work day). The problem is I care very much about my job and have a very strong work ethic. I really want to know if I would/could pass that passion (for want of a better word) onto stuff like classes, being a magistrate, voluntary work, looking after my kids...dunno.
