Okay, another really contentious topic: Boys' Haircuts

Any one else have problems getting decent haircuts for their boys?

I'm not a big fan of the full crop, myself, still less of the Number 1 all over look. All the old-fashioned barbers round here only seem to do one haircut, regardless of what you ask for, generally a fairly brutal short back and sides.

And if you go to a fancy kids' hairdressers, they trim a tiny bit off the bottom, generally not straight, and charge you a tenner for the privilege. Two weeks later it then needs doing again. I've taken to cutting it myself, which looks okay but not fantastic. But at least I can cut it wonky for free.

What do y'all do about this? Ds is 6, and I'm aiming for reasonably short at the sides and back, but longer on top (think pageboy). Any shorter on top and it sticks up like a bogbrush.

Our local hairdressers do ok, charge £5 or £6 for it.

Actually, last time, I went to a Black barbers, asked if they did white people hair, and they did. They did a great job, very tidy. Like you, I like short back and sides, longish top.

hornbag · 08/02/2006 13:12

As my DS is only 19months the hairdresser just cuts what she can safely -style doesn't come into it I'm afraid

QE2 · 08/02/2006 13:13

We must be the exception then. There is an excellent proper barbers shop just round the corner from us. Does a fab job and charges £6.

iota · 08/02/2006 13:14

I always go for short haircuts on my 2 - minimises the risk of nits ( and dead easy to check)

time for a posh haircut when they get bigger

kid · 08/02/2006 13:14

I took DS to a hairdressers once, but tbh, I can cut his hair better than she did. She told me she would blend the sides in, well it wasn't blended in when I looked at it. She did only charge £5 and was very quick. But in future, I will cut his hair.

Blu · 08/02/2006 13:14

Ordinay-ish Local hairdressers near me charge about £5-7 for children's haircuts, and barbers charge £5, so I know which I choose! Just tell them how much to cut.

shrub · 08/02/2006 13:18

i've been having this problem. had one hair cut at the salon i go to which charged £17 for the honour and were really quite rude to my ds1 kept grabbing his head and shoving it down and rolling their eyes as if doing children's hair was the lowest of lows, then went to another who as he was cutting said 'he doesn't like doing childrens hair because they can't keep still and gave an awful roman emporer look. went to local barber other day and was really specific (by this time ds1 really doesn't want to have hair cut anymore) short at sides and back with scissors not clippers please, leave sidesboards long and choppy on top. he was quite grufff but did a really good job all for £4.50! i shall be taking ds1 to him from now on until he retires. there is a dedicated children's hairdressers in the nearest city (25 miles away) complete with sit on fairground horses, videos, fishtank etc. to keeep them amused though have no idea what it would cost.

We are very lucky - my hairdresser is coasting serenely to retirement (I just don't know what I'll do when he goes...) and my two are his only clients under 21. In fact, we are all his only clients under 60...
But he does the sort of haircut you mean Frogs and we are prepared to drive across SE London to get it. Local barbers all do no 1 crops or unsuitably modish coiffures involving hairgel. We pay £7 but it is worth it. I lost patience with dd between visits, had a go myself, and now she looks like the little girl off the Yellow Pages ad

tortoiseshell · 08/02/2006 13:21

Ds goes to barber at bottom of our road - charges £5.50, and does short cut all over then with clippers round bottom and sides. It's just a bog standard hair cut as far as I can see, but looks really smart and isn't too expensive.

bangersandmash · 08/02/2006 13:21

well ds1 gets a no1 and ds2 a no.2 - although now done at home with the clippers.

frogs · 08/02/2006 13:21

Oh blu, believe me, I have told them. But they seem to have an inbuilt template haircut to which all the haircuts they do must conform, and I've tried several different barbers -- ds always comes out looking like a little boy from a 1950s photoshoot. There's a variant popular with Turkish barbers that is essentially a crop with a wierd little tufty bit at the front. Mercifully we've managed to avoid that so far.

Kid, do your ds's haircuts come out well when you do it? Is there a special trick to it? I think one of the problems with ds is that he has so damn much hair -- it's really thick, and if he was a girl he would have fantastic thick plaits. But for a boy's haircut it's a nightmare, as however much you hack off there always seems to be loads left. I have offered him bunches, but he unaccountably declined.

my mum cuts my ds's hair (2) and it's generally a short back and sides.. but she layers it really nicely so he's got cute little sticky up bits... and really lovely bed hair in the morning!

Pixel · 08/02/2006 13:44

My hairdresser is fantastic. Considering ds is thrashing about all over the place (he has ASD)and it sometimes takes two of us to hold him she does a really neat job. I'm determined he won't have a skin-head type haircut but she has to do it fairly short so we don't have to go too often and also as he hates having it washed. Think Bodie without the sideburns!

cece · 08/02/2006 13:44

Local hairdressers, just one lady charges me £6 I think.

I always ask for an old fashioned boys cut, no clippers. Think it looks good imo.

brimfull · 08/02/2006 13:50

I have this problem .ds has hair that sticks up and is quite sweet but the sides only need a trim.the barber always scalp him

Nemo1977 · 08/02/2006 13:51

local hairdressers charge £6for cut which takes approx 5 mins. Ds needs his hair cutting every 2-3weeks as it grows thick and fast. I clipper his hair on NO.6 all over as I already do dhs on a no.1 mainly due to him being bald. Then take blades off to trim around ears and neck.

LIZS · 08/02/2006 13:52

dh takes ds (7) to the local barbers but insists they use scissors not clippers, so he gets quite a nice layered cut.

crazydazy · 08/02/2006 13:55

DS has the "skinny head" as he calls it. It suits him and his personality tbh and looks very cute with it.

frogs · 08/02/2006 13:56

ggirl,. that's exactly the problem we have. With a normal haircut, the bit around the crown sticks up like a loo brush. And by the time that's grown long enough to lie down, the sides and back are too long. Sigh.

Am cheered by the fact that Marina seems to know what haircut I'm talking about, though -- started to worry I was just a lone obsessive.

Caligula · 08/02/2006 13:59

I like the 1940's / 1950's haircut look.

Can't be doing with the "sticking it up in front and putting gel on it" look for a 6 year old. My DS's hairdresser always insists on it.

Luckily, it settles down into Enid Blyton illustration look when it's washed. Phew.

Posey · 08/02/2006 13:59

frogs - I think you're localish to me so can I recommend "Harold and Leslie" on Caledonian Road. We all go there. Ds is a bit of a hairdresser phobic and its okay there. Leslie (the man) cuts ds's hair, no clippers, also dh who never gets clippered. Has a "proper" haircut which takes a bit of time. Dd and I have long hair and they trim us.
Prices - kids £4
dh - £8
Me - can't remember but its less than £10

frogs · 08/02/2006 14:03

A recommendation! Gold dust indeed -- thank you, Posey! Will try that. And £4 sounds like a bargain. How far up Cally road?

Are you coming to the stokey meetup tomorrow, or is that too far off your patch?

OP posts:
colditz · 08/02/2006 14:11

I give my son an enormous bag of chocolate raisins, and cut in myself in front of Pingu. Looks a bit Christopher Robin (in the book, not the cartoon) but not as long.

Posey · 08/02/2006 14:13

No not off my patch at all, but dh at work (he works evenings) and usual babysitter away. AND now dear ds has got the lurgy, d&v, delightful. Was hoping to come but will be there next time.

Harold and Leslie's is great, no appointments needed, so just take pot luck. I think dh said Leslie has Mondays off.
Anyway if you look at the A-Z and find Bridgeman Road and Huntingdon Street which both come out on the Cally. H&L is between them.

LadySherlockofLGJ · 08/02/2006 14:15

My DS has a very nice old fashioned haircut, cut with a scisscors and finished off on the nape of the neck, with a tiny clippers.

£10 however they do take about 20 -30 minutes to do it.
