Okay, another really contentious topic: Boys' Haircuts

Any one else have problems getting decent haircuts for their boys?

I'm not a big fan of the full crop, myself, still less of the Number 1 all over look. All the old-fashioned barbers round here only seem to do one haircut, regardless of what you ask for, generally a fairly brutal short back and sides.

And if you go to a fancy kids' hairdressers, they trim a tiny bit off the bottom, generally not straight, and charge you a tenner for the privilege. Two weeks later it then needs doing again. I've taken to cutting it myself, which looks okay but not fantastic. But at least I can cut it wonky for free.

What do y'all do about this? Ds is 6, and I'm aiming for reasonably short at the sides and back, but longer on top (think pageboy). Any shorter on top and it sticks up like a bogbrush.

We are getting this one for the Summer, What do you think ??

Posey · 08/02/2006 14:18

nice

LadySherlockofLGJ · 08/02/2006 14:21

Yes we are quite happy with it, we are just waiting for an appointment to get both ears pierced, and his Burberry to arrive.

Should go down really well in sleepy Farnham.

jco · 08/02/2006 14:21

i do my sons with clippers i bought myself, do it on a number 5 so its still longer on top then do around his ears and back of neck on a number 2

controlfreaky · 08/02/2006 15:14

live mostly in north london. trendy kids hairdresser charges £20 (yes £20). take my 2 ds's to mens hairdresser in country where he gives them fab 70's stylee fotballers haircuts for £5 each. result.

mszebra · 08/02/2006 15:49

DH does all the kids' hair.

choccywoccydoodaa · 08/02/2006 15:52

If I could do pics I would send you all a piccie of my ds who at 10 months really needs a trim but I'm concerned about what a barber would do to him. Ds currently looks like a scaled down version of Worzel Gummidge - his hair is fine and straight, growing outwards rather than down....

paolosgirl · 08/02/2006 15:57

DS has the weirdest hair you have ever seen. He has a triple crown, and a mop of thick, straight hair that is every hairdressers worst nightmare, so it's not many that can do short sides and back, with longer on the top. Actually, that reminds me - I must make an appointment for him.

TheDullWitch · 08/02/2006 15:59

My sons are refusing haircuts at present. They want to look like The Strokes My mother not happy.

nitfreecod · 08/02/2006 16:02

liek longer hair on older boys not on littleeies
loks tpretestious imfo

paolosgirl · 08/02/2006 16:03

Agree - long hair, spikes and dye on little boys is a big fat NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

lazycow · 08/02/2006 16:11

All this is making me happy that ds (15 months) is still pretty bald - not enough hair to cut except at the back of neck. I cut that as he was looking like he had a mullet - bald top and long at back - not an attractive look even in my gorgeous ds. I look forward to all these problems [smile. Maybe he'll stay almost bald until 2yrs old - here's hoping.

serenity · 08/02/2006 16:16

DSs want Manga hair like Cloud

Suffice to say, they both get a No4 on the top, and a 3 round the sides. I don't get to the hairdresser, so it's going to be a while before they do!

doormat · 08/02/2006 16:18

Ds1 gets a short back and sides from hairdresser every month and it costs a £5.

I give ds2 and ds3 a No2 every few weeks.

Dont like long hair on lads as they look like moshers (no offence to moshers btw)

paolosgirl · 08/02/2006 16:19

What's a mosher?!

Easy · 08/02/2006 16:20

Can't read all this, supposed to be working but ....
I agree Frogs, ds (6) has a proper little boys haircut (think Enid Blyton 1950's haircut). Can't bear the shaved look that makes 'em all look like thugs, despite the Nits issue.

My friend is a hairdresser, and she does it for ds, altho she needs alot of patience. I pay £3.50 if I take him on a Monday, but £5 if its Fri-Sat.

BTW my BIL's grandson (aged 3) is of mixed race, with afro hair (sorry if that's not PC, just don't know the proper description), and when they brought him round at christmas I was appalled. His hair was virtually shaved except for tufty bits round his ears. I said "who has done that to him, and why?"
SIL said she had done it, but he doesn't like having round his ears done, so wouldn't sit still.

They pay huge amounts of money to buy Osh Kosh and Timberland clothes for him (the child has 4 coats), why not spend a fiver getting his hair cut properly?

doormat · 08/02/2006 16:22

paolosgirl a mosher is a trogg

Easy · 08/02/2006 16:23

and a trogg is .......?

You are not helping

tarantula · 08/02/2006 16:39

Im with jco on this. I did dss's hair for a long time. No. 7 on top and 2 round the back. Hes refusing to get it cut now and it looks awful and has no style at all. Oh well thats 14 yr olds for you.

doormat · 08/02/2006 16:43

LOL @easy
a trogg or a mosher is a person (mainly teenagers)who have goth emblems emblazoned on their t shits and wear long coats and baggy jeans, have leather bands on wrists etc
and smell of patchouli (trogg) oil

do you know what I mean now

MarsOnLife · 08/02/2006 16:44

afro is the only way to say it Easy lol.

DT2 (2 on Sat) has long curly hair. I just can't bring myself to cut it. His hair is a lovely mix between afro and euro hair. Big, fat, juicy curls. He has one that goes down the centre of his face. Yummy!

I know that I'll cut it one day, but not yet. Once it's cut it will have to stay very short because of the way the curls grow. DS1 has quite short hair. He doesn't look thug like he looks gorgeous. His school don't allow shaved heads so he has a very short cut.

Our hairdresser comes to the house and charges me mates rates. She does a wonderful job.

SorenLorensen · 08/02/2006 16:49

I have my clippers and I'm not afraid to use them I do ds1, ds2, and dh. Dh makes me laugh as he witters on about "well, I'd like it left a little longer on the top, and can you do this here, and that there" and I go "I only do one haircut - same as the kids" and that's what he gets every time. It's a very old fashioned "little boy" cut - short at the back and sides, longer on top (all done with the clippers) and I do the fringe with scissors. None of them have 'difficult' hair though.

Tortington · 08/02/2006 16:52

i too am with the clippers - clippers make me happy and nit free.

dh get an all over baldy cut

ds1 used to get number 4 or sommat - then he went all teenagery at 15 and demanded a hairdressers

ds2 get s number 5

if i see a nit theres trouble

frogs · 08/02/2006 18:15

Presumably curls are a slightly safer bet for a diy cut, tho, must be a bit more forgiving of wonky bits? Ds has completely straight hair, really thick, and slightly variegated in colour (blonde bits on the top and towards the end, darker underneath and towards the roots. (Not dyed, btw, just his baby blondness growing out!). Every duff stroke of the scissors is immediately visible.

Blandmum · 08/02/2006 18:24

Ds used to go ape shit crazy if he had his hair cut. At times it used to take me, dh and the hairdresser to get it done. One time he went so mad, he vomited everywhere.....thankfully this was a home cut.

In those awful days he used to have a number 4.....that way I only had to get him done a few times a year.

Now he has it clippered in the back and cut on the top IYSWIM. Short but not the shaved look he used to have

dh has a no 2
