Mouse? Cockroach?

Aagh! In my kitchen just now, I caught sight - for a second - of a little thing zipping across the floor and behind my freezer. A bit longer than my thumb I think, wider, and dark grey/brown/black. And very fast. I saw it a few days ago but only out of the corner of my eye and thought it was a large spider.

Eek! What could it be? And what can I do about it? Do I need to do anything?

And if I get a sonic vermin scaring device, will the scared mouse just leave the kitchen and take up residence in the living room?

Bizarrely enough I'm less scared of the cockroach option than of mice - lived in the middle East as a child so lots of cockroaches!

Have a sniff, mice smell quite strongly. I was trying to think of what, but can only come up with , Mouse. Bit gerble-ey. Look for the turds. If you have mice you'll have lots.
