I think mine might have a probe to it .. I have yet to see it in real life but I think from what I recall - I saw it for all of 10 seconds before buying it ..I will let you know when the thing arrives.
Madonna della salute today - a real venetian thing . We went at 8.30 to light a candle and pray for good health , loads of people going. WIll be manic this afternoon.

Ah Rosa!! That's awesome!! Well it is advertised as a meat sensor but it is a probe thermometer! In the details below it says alerts you when your dish is perfectly cooked, so it is good for everything. Maybe there's a button that indicates what's the right temperature for meat stuff (I saw a chicken-meat sign on the left button).
Good buy anyway, complimenti!! Wink

It's very useful, I now use it constantly. Maybe it is also due that we had to use them while at the chef school and after a while I bought it for myself. Sometimes food seems cooked from the outside but it is not inside.

Hope you had a nice 'Madonna della Salute' day. Lived in Italy for nearly all my life and never heard of it LOL

Boobz · 22/11/2012 12:03

Hello everyone,

I hope you don't mind me interrupting. DH and I will be moving to Rome in January, and we're looking to bring our nanny with us. I think this will mean we need a Nulla Osta for her before we can apply for work visa D... does anyone have any experience of applying for this? Either for yourself or for an employee? She is from the Philippines - not sure if this makes a difference or not.

I think I have found the right place to apply for the Nulla Osta but it's on the Italian Ministero Dell'interno and obviously all in italian! I can't find an English version.

I'm worried we're going to run out of time as from what I've seen on the web, it can take months for a NO to be awarded, and then a further month for the Visa to be awarded. We currently live in Kenya, so I really don't want to leave her here whilst she waits for it all to come through (would be different if we were in the UK as I could probably lodge her with my mum or someone - can't do that here!)...

Any ideas? Is there an English site I missing??! Has anyone done an application?

Sorry to but in - I did an advanced for Nulla Osta and it took me to this thread (well, no. 23 actually).

Thanks!

MerlinScot · 22/11/2012 13:33

No idea darling. I'm sure she needs documents concerning extra EU citizens but what you should do to speed up the process.. I can't help there, sorry.

Is the Italian embassy in Kenia not helping you at all?
I wouldn't be surprised they're incompetent, but did you try at least?
That's a particular situation because she's employed by you, so she would need a permesso di soggiorno signed by you.

Anyway, given the huge quantity of illegal immigrants present on Italian soil (it is estimated kind of 4 millions), I guess if she enters with a tourist visa she could stay 3 months in Italy (given that she's with you) and wait for her permesso there without leaving her in Kenya.

Furthermore, look at the agreements between Italian government and Philippine's one. To give you an example, I moved to UK from New Zealand. I had to leave because my government hasn't special agreements with the New Zealander one, like they have with UK, Ireland and few others.

Boobz · 22/11/2012 14:26

Thanks for the advice Merlin. I had thought about bringing her in on a tourist visa, but I think you have to, by the letter, not be on Italian soil whilst the Nulla Osta is applied for, so don't want to scupper that if I can help it.

The Italian embassy just points you towards a third party company they use for processing visas, which isn't much help given I need the NO before I can even go to this company to get the visa. I might try phoning them again tomorrow.

Ugh. I hate all this.

Francagoestohollywood · 22/11/2012 16:53

Hi Boobz, I have no idea either, I am afraid.

If you want I can gather info on when there will be the next "sanatoria", ie the move to legalise and get a permesso di soggiorno to those people working here who aren't from the EU.

I second Merlin's advice to go and ask the embassy or consulate in Kenya.
Or why don't you link the ministero dell'interno page and I can try to translate/explain.

Francagoestohollywood · 22/11/2012 16:55

Oh sorry, I totally lost your reply to Merlin Shock

MerlinScot · 23/11/2012 13:12

Boobz, had a look at the ministero dell'interno website yesterday, it say that you have to ask for a permesso di soggiorno in the local council where you will reside. How are you asking for such a permit/visa if you're not there yet?
Try to get someone at the ministero dell'interno to write to you indicating the correct procedure (email, post, whatever) and then when you go to a questura for the permit, if they try to discuss the issue you show them their email.

I'm afraid that Italian consulates/embassies get people more confused than they are. I'm postponing lots of papers to 2013 when I'll visit Italy again and ask the local council staff where I was born because here in UK it is just a waste of time to ask for any information.

Let us know. If you need any translation, as Franca already offered, pls feel free of saying :)

Cheers

Rosa · 23/11/2012 14:10

All I can add Boobz is good luck ... I visited the Consulate in Londaon a few times to get a validation so I could get a permesso di soggiorno but this was many many years ago and I recall hassle...The Italians love paperwork stamps and making people run from A-B for the sheer hell of it ..
God its warm today silly weather ! I had today planned to chill, wrap presents that have to go to the Uk and have a sort out of the dds stuff. get a call from DH saying he had blocked his back and couldn't hardly walk let alone carry stuff that was in the car. Had to drop everything and go and meet him . Got back about 30 mins ago so thats my day gone ! He has gone to the doc as he could hardly walk. But , when I left him the Ibruprofen was starting to work !!
HAve a good weekend .... we were going out on Sunday but will see how Dh is now !

Hi Merlin,

We know where we will be residing, but obviously we won't be there until January... I can't imagine they would make us wait to get there before starting the process - that's madness! That means our nanny will definitely be stuck here without us if we have to do it that way...

... I have written to the British Embassy in Rome and am hoping they have some kind of protocol section which can help me with this as otherwise, it's going to be a nightmare. I have got an Italian interpreter coming around on monday to help me with the website process, but am hoping the embassy come back to me before then with some kind of explanation of what I should do (I can't imagine I am the first UK diplomat to ever bring a nanny to Italy before...)

Thanks for offers of translation! If the interpreter doesn't do a good job on monday I may take you up on it!

So what is this thread anyway (now I have picked all your brains...) are you all UK mumsnetters living in Italy? Do you all meet up in real life?

Rosa · 23/11/2012 15:07

We are mixture of Italians abroad , Brits in Italy and Italians who were in the Uk and we have been chatting for over 25,000 posts ....so please do join us another member is in Rome Banana Gio she might be able to help with local things , Sputnik is also Rome / Umbria based. I am a brit in Venice and then there are more of us that pop in and out.
Probably your best bet is the Consulate - they have helped me in the past .
Right off to get DD1 and then send her off to gym club. No word from DH yet hope he is ok his doc apt was over an hour ago .....

I'm originally an Italian living in the middle of nowhere in Scotland LOL
I stress 'originally' because I think I lost all the 'Italianishness' in favour of... who knows what. At the moment, I'm nothing and going towards a naturalisation... British, Scottish? Let's ask Salmond Confused

I'm also a recent addition to this famiglia online Blush

Sorry I'm in a good mood today, maybe because I received my fleece set, so wearing something warm :)

Happy birthday Franca and sympathise re the 2 day hangover. I had one of those this week....
Hi Boobz, I am a Brit with Italian DP and DS in Rome. Are you looking forward to coming here? Hope you get some joy with the embassy. If you need any tips or info re Rome then give me a shout.
gorgeous day here, I really shouldnt be sitting here mumsnetting....

Rosa · 25/11/2012 13:21

I have just had a couple of too many glasses of rosso with lunch....it was yummy. DH is getting there thanks it was the old Italian invented ' colpa della strega!' another of those ilnesses that you won't find in the medical books... However he can walk now , not really bend ( so excused from loading and unloading the washing machine and dishwasher).
I should be planning the next 2 weeks ENglish lessons but I don't think I can write !!

OP posts:
MerlinScot · 25/11/2012 17:31

LOL Rosa, you mean 'colpo della strega'?
That is not a disease, it just means backache, or when you're stuck halfway while trying to stand up and you appear as an old witch walking with a stick (Befana- style!).
That's nothing, you should hear what my grannie was saying about 'guarire dalla paura'! Means that if you had had some kind of scaring moment and you wereconsequently a bit shocked, then my grannie used to make you sit on a chair and put your feet in a bucket full of a warm liquid which was made using special herbs boiled for a long time... of course it did nothing, it just warmed your feet up! All this stuff is traditional superstitions and customs, so don't worry about colpi della strega, lots of rest and Cat scans/X-rays if required ;)

Franca, hangover for two days? woah, how much wine did you drink? Wine

Rosa · 25/11/2012 17:45

opps colpo... I know its invented a few threads back we had a list of the invented Italian diseases like ' cervicale'..another one that you will never see in medical books.
MIl is one for antibiotics for everything as they cure everything including anythig virale.... I have to call me paed when the dds have a febbre ( I don't I just tell her I do).
Love your Grans cure for a scare ...Must try it sometime.
I am having another glass of rosso ( it is a good bottle) .... Its either that or I use it in cooking domani ....

Grin Merlin I drank too much whisky from your part of the world on firday night.

Woke up with bad headache, which went with a tachipirina 1000, but felt nauseous until this morning!

Lol at cervicale and colpo della schiena. They are obviously caused by "correnti d'aria", which we know are lethal.
Grin

spaghettina · 26/11/2012 12:32

My MIL is another one who thinks antibiotics will cure anything including a cough and a cold!! No use explaining til I'm blue in the face that a cold is a virus.
Any time DD gets a cold - "How did that happen? Must have been a colpo d'aria". Gastroenteritis and carsickness have also been blamed on the aforementioned colpo d'aria.

Worryingly I have developed cervicale since moving here..(DP claims its due to my awful British habit of not drying my hair properly and - gasp - sometimes going out with wet hair - only in the summer of course. Have had random strangers warning me of the dangers of this so I was warned!)

Is it just that Italians are oversensitive to every twinge whereas the Brits are shamefully out of touch with their own bodies?? Hmm

Francagoestohollywood · 26/11/2012 13:39

Lol I developed cervicale in the UK and blamed it on the bad weather Grin!!!

MerlinScot · 26/11/2012 21:34

Hahahaha Spaghettina, I don't think Italians are oversensitive, although some of them, like me, are super-wrecks and a 'corrente d'aria', as Franca said, could be lethal to me!! (and I live in Scotland.... [hmmm]).

Franca, you'd be surprised that I 'touched' whisky once many years ago and never did it again because I felt sick for days afterwards.
So I've no idea how the Scottish whisky tastes at all... I'm quite jealous of Rosa though because I deeply miss the red wine Wine

By the way, I know you're getting fair weather there... up here we've no floods but storm is massive.. we're expecting even snow mixed with rain tomorrow night... the worst time of the year started :(

Francagoestohollywood · 27/11/2012 10:31

Oh I like Whisky and Vodka too. I like strong stuff Grin.

It is raining here too, and is expected to do so for the whole week, but not that strong, and it is still very mild, which I can't complain about, but it is freaky.

Anyway, I now have a cold, and feel a bit crap, but I forced myself to hit the gym this morning.

I saw there's flooding in the UK, I still remember vividly the autumn of 2000, lots of flood and I used to commute to Bristol by train, and it was a nightmare for months.
