what you really wan tis a fram that gives you virtual pivot point suspension.
Have a look at the \link{http://sports.search.ebay.co.uk/santa-cruz_Cycling_W0QQcatrefZC12QQfromZR40QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQsacatZ7294\sanatcruz on ebay}. The heckler or a blur would be about perfect and definately worth the money!\link{http://www.santacruzbicycles.com/\the real deal}

soyabean · 25/04/2006 08:38

thanks chapsmum will have a look

leogaela · 25/04/2006 11:21

Thanks Chapsmum, not looked properly yet but I think the Heckler would be my kind of thing. There is ONE shop in Switzerland that sell Santa Cruz, keep my fingers crossed that its close enough to where I live! I thought Santa Cruz made snowboards! Have to work out what virtual pivot point suspension is though Blush!

soyabean · 25/04/2006 11:25

let me know if you work it out leogaela. I am very definitely noy a technical type of cyclist..

chapsmum · 25/04/2006 16:16

It is based on formula one suspesion, from what Iknow the aim of the suspesion is to keep traction between the back wheel and the ground rather letting the back suspension simply absorb your weight bouncing on the ground, makes for a very responsive bike and a fabulous cross country moutain bike!!!

chapsmum · 28/04/2006 21:45

nudge, it gone quiet again are you lot ditchin g me for some proper cycling?

I'm still here. Made a decision on the bike this weekend but will update tomorrow as its time for me to go to bed :)!

Twiga · 01/05/2006 21:04

Just seen this thread so thought I'd say hi. Dh and I were in our local cycle centre today looking at new bikes and a trailer to take dd out and about in - very excited about it all. We've come away with prices to think over and are pretty set on going back Thurs and making our purchases. Dd will be 8 months old in just under a fortnight and we're really keen to get out and about with her - the wee cycle helmets are very cute! I'm not sure we'd call ourselves serious cyclists - we mostly just enjoy an amble around the place, gives us a chance to have a good natter. We're currently staying in Dumfries and it's great for cycling in this area - we spent the first summer we were married cycling round this area (did 250 miles in total) and it's very pretty countryside - so we're looking fwd to re-discovering some places and finding new stuff. Will have a read back over the thread aat another point but just wanted to say hello (off to watch "Old Tricks" on the telly).

Twiga · 01/05/2006 21:07

Could I just ask if anyones got time could you have a quick look at this thread and add any thoughts? Thanks - \link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=1375&threadid=166858&stamp=060423222125\cycling with young children}

leogaela · 02/05/2006 09:52

Hi Twiga :)! Which bike trailer are you thinking of buying? We are looking at the Chariot Cougar (I think, or could be corsaire). If you look further down the thread there is a link from MSZebra on her experiences of bike trailers.

We took my bike to the bike shop and did all the measuring up, I should ahve a smaller frame, the one I have is about 3cm too big, but we have decided that most of the biking we do this year will be on trails through the forest towing ds in the trailer and not so much single trails and technical moutain biking. A smaller frame for the mountain biking would be ideal, but for the other stuff my bike is OK so for the time being I am gong to stick with my bike, but change the handlebar stem (bit between handlebars and fork stem) for a short one and have raised handlebars to give more stability or when I do do some real stuff. I have really good components on my bike and getting something new of the same standard is going to cost us a bit more than we can spend at the moment so we've decided to wait a year or two until we have more freedom again before buying me a new bike.

Makes sense or not?

Twiga · 02/05/2006 16:28

We actually went back to the bike shop today to order everything - dh did a few checks on the things we'd been recommended on line We're getting a Phillips hardbase trailer (link below)for dd and a Ridgeback mx2 each. Got dd the cutest wee helmet - bright pink with lots of hearts and flowers on, very girlie!

Leogaela, those ones look really nice, we came across the when doing some research on line, but slightly outwith our price bracket. Will you need to buy a separate buggy kit for it? Pretty sure the Phillips one comes with the buggy adaptions included - \link{http://www.bikesnbits.com/products.php?plid=m5b10s97p643\phillips trailer} - we thought the price wasn't bad for it.

Twiga · 02/05/2006 16:30

Meant to say thanks for the note about Mszebra's trailer link, was interesting reading Smile.

chapsmum · 02/05/2006 19:12

hello, twiga, i think we have spoken before...
you are the reg's wife???
I stay in glasgow and would love to know how you get on on the trails with your purchases. Some of my fav trails are near where you stay. Have heard the the re-vamp in Ae is quite somethingGrin We went for a seat withthe chap but have been given a trailor. I fyou want to try before you buy, rics bike shed in mabie forrest have trailors and ride alongs for hire.

We could do an expedition one day...?

Twiga · 02/05/2006 20:07

Hi Chapsmum, we have chatted, you were kind enough to reply to my thread on Dumfries when we were getting ready to move for our year here - dh is a surgical SHO3.

Rics has now moved to Drumlanrig Castle, apparently he's developing further trails and stuff on the estate there. Reading between the lines it looks like he wanted to develop slightly more radical trails than the forestry commission at Mabie who were concentrating on family friendly stuff - no acromoney just sounds like he was looking for a diff challenge. We were out at Riks today to have a look at some things but unfortunately no-one much around other - wasn't really the weather for it her today! Ric himself would appear to be a bit of a legend amongst cyclists here?!

We've now ordered stuff, thought we'd just go for it - dh was much happier with the idea of a trailer over a seat as dd is still quite young - fortunate that she is big for her age and great head control etc, has been sitting from 4 months and unsupported from 5 months.

Would love to do a trip out sometime although you guys are probably a lot fitter than us amatuers in the Twiga household - it would give you a good excuse to head this way again and try some of the newer stuff trail wise.

Twiga · 02/05/2006 20:08

Oh and our stuff should be ready in about a week, so once we've got it road-tested I'll let you know......

chapsmum · 02/05/2006 20:21

will look forward to hearing from you.
And we are by no means fit, am very very slow but can go on efor ages, kid of like a broken duracell bunny...
Anyway drop me a wee line at dollyburd12 at hotmail dot com and wee can form some cunning plans!

OP posts:
chapsmum · 16/05/2006 18:48

am I gonna have to take up running to get some mates???

OP posts:
leogaela · 17/05/2006 09:10

I thought you had started running????

Well finally this weekend I picked up my bike :o! And with new handlebars is feels great! We rented a trailer to try it out (and bought one yesterday)and went biking. DS loved it, climbed into it himself on Sunday - and did his first single trail (although very easy).
It was fantastic to be on a bike again! Its hilly where we are and I towed the trailer most of the way, it wasn't so tough and I am fitter than I thought! dh was a bit uncertain about how much ds was getting jolted around
I also got a map of single trails in our area (we only moved here in october), there is loads of stuff to do, so I'm really excited now to get out there without trailer and explore!

Just got to get my lazy arse on my road bike now!

Chapsmum - did you get out this weekend?

chapsmum · 17/05/2006 09:19

I did indeed I was down in the sottish boarders, but unfortunately there was not enough room on the car for the bike and seat.
So I went xploring with the macpac.
Had a great time on my own/ it was suppsed to be a hen weekend but was a bit baby ungriendly so me and the chap did alot of walking.
And he has discovered playparks in a big way!!
Anyway, I have always run, but I hate it with a passion, I only do it during adventure race if I can at all avoid it!!.
DP is away this weekend but then next week am off the the mountain bike world cup!!!!
am v v excited, was actually hoping to be working at it so I could get a closer peek!!!

OP posts:
leogaela · 17/05/2006 10:32

How heavy is chap now? how do you manage with the macpac? we were going to get one but didn't bother and now dh's sister has given us her old one (not a macpac though), but ds is now 11Kg so I'm a bit reluctant to try it out.

worldcup sounds great. have you raced on your bike?

How about that trip to Switzerland you were planning?

zephyrcat · 17/05/2006 10:44

How did I miss this thread? I love cycling... am a roadie though. I used to be a cycle courier - best job I ever had!!

chapsmum · 17/05/2006 12:14

Well as long as you are enthusiastic, we can make the exception to the rule abou roadys, come an d tell us about your adventures!!!

OP posts:
chapsmum · 17/05/2006 12:19

leogaela TBH I havent weighed him in a while but they say the pack can do them up till four years!!!(he is 10 months just now)
Anyway I'm out with him in it every day ( I hate buggies) so I've not really noticed him getting heavier.
I have raced on my bike but not in purely mountain bike races, raced in adventure races. have a look on www.aceraces.co.uk for the kind of thing I do. Never really did it with any intentions of compteting to win, but I have completed every race I have entered.

The mtb world cup is amazing, I worked at it two years ago and the guys on the down hill were absolutely incredable, saw steve pete, he is very cool andwhat a rider!!! Those cross country guys, there thighs are the size of tree trunks
The switzeralnd trip and indeed any honeymoon have been postponed till the winter as I have just go a new job and cant afford to take time off!

OP posts:
staceysmom · 17/05/2006 21:33

can anyone recommend a cycle trailer suitable for a 4 month old, been told burley d lite but are expensive are there others

chapsmum · 18/05/2006 09:09

if you scroll down this page, I think it is mszebra who r/v all the bike trailors.
I tried the chap in one. (i did find a fairly decent one for £100 think it was a trek but tbh non of the seat recline and I felt he was just a wee bit small for it, we hung on and bought him a bike seat which at 9 months he loves. we have a co-pilot limo which is detachable from the pannier it sits on and reclines to about 45 degrees

HTH
