anti-virus?

do i have to buy it again every year!? my mcafee has expired and they are asking me to buy it again online. here i was thinking that once id bought it i could just download updates? what the.....does everyone have to do this?

My dh says you have to pay every year for it anyway, but can then download updates for it during the year.

I use AVG antivirus software - the basic package is free
