I am thinking of getting a pet tortoise.

Has anyone got any advice or experience to share?

Such as which species to get? I fancy one that can go in the garden during the summer..

Thanks

can't help laughing at the idea of a tortoise in the fridge - I need more details - is he in a box or what?

bramblina · 31/01/2006 21:30

yes, well packed in soli (to retain moisture) then that box is packed in another box with shredded paper. Fortunately he's only 2yrs so fits quite well, but I think it's going to cause problems next year! Both boxes are well punctured to allow ventilation. When we went away for the wkend I had to ask my MIL to come over and open the fridge a couple of times a day!

have you ever had guests have a look inside expecting food? I'd love to set them up!

No, he only lasted 4 wks this yr but everyone we told thought it would be hysterical if we came home one night drunk and thought he was a pie. Oh if I had a pound for everyone who said it, and laughed hysterically afterwards!!!

We had a tortoise as pet when I was a child. He was called Mr T. and he was mean. He lived in the pond in the garden. He eventually ran away, probably back to the creek where we found him.

Oooh fab! What kind? What's it's name? How big is it?

I am really rather taken with tortoises. don;t any of you worry about them outliving you? how do you know someone will take good care of it when you're gone?

The tortoise trust will take them in
