Moral Dilema - Do I tell I'm Preggers?

spikeycat · 19/11/2003 13:45

Just need a bit of advice really, I went for an interview today for a small P/T job in an estate agents on a sunday. I didn't tell them I was 5 months pregnant (you can't really tell) but if they phone and offer me the job should I tell them then?

I know I'm under no legal obligation to do so but its just tricky...hmmmmmm - any advice?

If you are not really worried about the money and it is about righting a wrong - I would push on. But if you need the money - take it. Well done you for not allowing this to be swept under the carpet!!

M2T · 07/01/2004 14:15

SPikeycat - How long would it take for the 2k to come through if you fought them though?

Well done for following it through!

handlemecarefully · 07/01/2004 14:17

Well done Spikeycat!

I would agree with DSW re whether to accept the interim offer

SenoraPostrophe · 07/01/2004 14:19

woohoo £1000!

Maybe barter a bit (£1500), but do you really want to be doing with a full tribunal while pregnant?

well done - drinks all round?

Kayleigh · 07/01/2004 14:19

I'd probably take the money and run. Do you really need all the aggrevation (sp?)of a tribunal ?

WideWebWitch · 07/01/2004 14:26

Agree with Senora, try bartering and if they won't budge, accept the £1k. tbh, they must know you've got a good case if they've offered to settle this soon. IMO anyway. Well done!

spikeycat · 07/01/2004 14:28

I am really tempted to take the cash, but then again it wasn't really about the money in the first instance.... Trouble is, I could do with the dosh now, I need to buy another bot and pram after all!

I am going to go back with a counter offer and ask for £2,000, if they come back with £1,500 I'll take it, if not then its off to tribunal - what do you think?

OP posts:
DSW · 07/01/2004 14:29

Go for it - you've made your point. Can I have some?

spikeycat · 07/01/2004 14:29

I meant cot, although I could do with a new bot too, this ones getting a bit big!

OP posts:
WideWebWitch · 07/01/2004 14:33

spikeycat, yes, it's worth a go. but are you prepared to go for it if they say no and withdraw the offer? awards aren't generally high at tribunal. can i have a new bot too while you're at it?

sis · 07/01/2004 15:23

spikeycat - offers through Acas are normally negotiable unless they specify that it is a 'final offer' so I would say you are proably safe to put in a counter-offer. You never know, they may accept £2000 - especially if you tell acas to tell them that you have done research and that is the sum that is normally awarded in these cases.

Good luck!

spikeycat · 07/01/2004 15:32

Just spoke to acas man - he doesn't think they will budge as he had given them some case law already. he is going to put it to them so fingers crossed - if they say no I think I may take the cash - I cant be doing with all this at 30 weeks preggers!

well done spikeycat!! how's the pregnancy going btw?

spikeycat · 07/01/2004 20:16

Its going fine thanks morroco, apart from if I DARE to look at anything spicy or with garlic in I am soooo soooo ill with tummy pains its untrue. Strange comsidering with DS I had dp take me out 2 times a week for a madras?? Maybe its a girl??

They won't budge by the way £1K, take it or leave it.... I want to go for it but am scared that the tribunal will think I have been greedy and then make me pay their costs - Hellllppp!

OP posts:
WideWebWitch · 07/01/2004 22:36

I may be wrong but I don't think you can be orderd to pay their costs spikeycat. I'd take the money then. They won't do that again, hey?!

Employment Tribunal rarely award costs - you would have to go out of your way to annoy them and show that you were being really petty in bringing the claim - which you are not!

miranda2 · 08/01/2004 15:53

I'd take the money and run. Less hassle, and you;ve made your point.

spikeycat · 27/02/2004 12:46

All - I have gone to the tribunal and won! They were found guilty of sex discrimination and made to pay me more than they offered through ACAS - so I am a happy bunny and pleased I stuck up for all of us - now I don't know whether to contact local press to really get them going!!

Anyway - thought you would like to know the outcome

LIZS · 27/02/2004 12:47

Congratulations !! Definitely makes the battle more worthwhile and hopefully you can now move on. Well done for sticking it out.

Metrobaby · 27/02/2004 12:51

Fantastic news Spikey - well done for standing up to them. Some people would not have bothered at all, and at least the company will be a lot better educated for it.

PS I would go to the papers - but then again I am pg, hormonal and feeling particularly agressive at the mo

Crunchie · 27/02/2004 12:52

Good for you, it really is the principle of the thing

SoupDragon · 27/02/2004 12:53

Well Done!!!

prufrock · 27/02/2004 13:33

Well done spikeycat
