Asda and gift receipts

Not sure if this is in the right place. dd received an outfit for xmas age 3-6 months (she is now 4.5m) so thought I would exchange it. Asked friend and a week ago saw her and she gave me the receipt. Took it to till in asda with alternative, as original outfit presumably sold out in sale, to be told I could only have sale price even with receipt, as more than 28 days had elapsed, and I didn't have a gift receipt! Friend is very cross about this, as she did her shopping in Nov, and was not asked if she would like a gift receipt and knew nothing about them. Decided to keep original outfit and let dd wear it even once rather than let asda pocket the difference. Also politely told them would not be requiring the other stuff I was planning to buy (sleepsuits) then went next door to mothercare in a fit of pique and bought more expensive ones
When did this gift receipt business start, am I really out of touch with consumer rights?
