Vanilla scented candles from Ikea - don't even need to light them.

i dont use scented candles - just normal ones seem to clear the air

DaddyCool · 20/01/2006 15:27

my brother used to put a mixture of coffee grains and nutmeg in a tinfoil pie dish (or just a metal cookie tray would probably do) on low, on his hob.

He was a little strange... but it smelled lovely.

How about using an oil burner with water and 3-4 drops of lavender oil?

DaddyCool · 20/01/2006 15:29

i always thought my bro's method was good because it avoided girly, perfumy oily things and gave the house a real homey, nice smell.

Put a vanilla pod in the oven for a bit. Same idea as the candles, but without the..er..candles.

sunchowder · 20/01/2006 15:32

I burn a lot of candles, plain ones do clean the air and make it fresh, you don't even need scented candles really. Also, an hour or so before they come you can boil some cinnamon sticks and whole cloves to freshen the kitchen. Lemon and Orange oils and polishes also freshen the living areas if you have wood furniture.

Open windows, no. 1. Even on the coldest day, I still open all the windows for a few minutes each day, usually in the morning.

Candles. I use beeswax ones. Lovely, low key smell. Not chemically at all and no petrolatum or other such ingredients. I buy beeswax sheets from a local farmer and cotton wicks online.

Oil burning. I make my own mixes. Now that we have a newborn, however, I only burn lavender oil mixed w/a carrier oil - I use grapeseed.

A vanilla pod in a casserole dish of water. Place in the oven under very low heat.

Pour some vodka into a clean spray bottle. Add a few drops of your fav essential oil. Instant air freshner w/o all that chemical crap.

I HATE having a smelly house but I also hate all those Glade fake crap type things.

Lavender and beeswax polish for the wooden furniture, Pruni, and a few drops of lavender oil on the carpet by the radiator or where hot pipe runs under the boards.

Your dh will not be able to hunt down candles in disgust and the effect will be subtle

I don't use bicarb on the carpets b/c I have a Dyson w/HEPA filter and the bicarb would clog the filter.

You can also put essential oils on your lightbulbs.

I prefer my oil burner, but mine's metal and has a really deep well.

Open the windows for a through draft. Sometimes use incense sticks
