Why on earth would you get your babies ears pierced???

Woman walks into Claires Acessories with her 16 week old baby and asks how old they have to be to get her ears done. Answer 4 months but must have had her jabs. Ok mom replies, lets do it.

Poor screaming baby has pain inflicted on her uneccesarily so mum can show off her oh so fashoinable baby.

Why????

I was so [shocked]

I could never cause my baby undue pain and discomfort. What makes people do this??

I can understand ear peircing (althou stand firm with the whole not for my children under 10 at least) I can understand male circumsision but female??? I can't understand that one. and I know it's in some cultures. the pain of thhat must be unbearable.

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 18/01/2006 20:33

I know - but still don't think you can compare even male and female circumsision - massive difference. You don't often hear of men who've been circumsised having problems for the rest of their life, if they even survive it in the first place!

hotmama · 18/01/2006 20:35

OK - ignore the female circumcision bit. Hopefully, you get the gist of what I am saying - even if you don't agree?

flutterbee · 18/01/2006 20:35

I don't think you can compare male and female circumsition and even though I think it's wrong to have any babies ears pierced I can understand the cultural reasoning, anyone who doesn't is living on another planet.

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 18/01/2006 20:37

yes - I do

still giggling slightly at the "hanky-code"......when I clicked the link I have to confess I though it was going to stand for "hanky-panky" code ***

hotmama · 18/01/2006 20:37

I didn't say I couldn't understand the cultural reasoning - but that just saying that something is a cultural practice makes it O.K.

SnowmAngeliz · 18/01/2006 20:39

I'm with hotmama, saying it's cultural doesn't mean i think it's o.k ,(and i know it's not my decision what other people do with their babies).
I do think it's just wrong to be allowed to peirce a baby for no reason, pain, risk of infection, what for???

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 18/01/2006 20:42

I see where you're coming from....but parents from coutnries where attachment parenting is followed to the hilt (babies carried around on backs ALL day, apart from when being fed or played with) think our 'cultural' way of bringing up babies is cruel and leaves the baby feeling isolated and unloved.....(or something along those lines)

Blandmum · 18/01/2006 20:42

While male and female circumcision are not comparable, both are still condoned for 'cultural' reasons (as distinct from religious for male circumcision)

munz · 18/01/2006 20:43

I still say perhaps claires/the government should bring in some rules or guidelines 16 weeks seems far to young to me to have it done esp as that's they're policy - althou I guess at least everythings clean etc (I assume) in claires. those with the cultral thing should feel free to have them peirced if they choose to without resorting to a run down dirty place iiycwim. not sure how that would work??

hotmama · 18/01/2006 20:44

HRH - I agree who say's the way we bring up children is 'right'.

munz · 18/01/2006 20:44

HRH that's v true I suspect there's a lot of our pratices that other folk don't understand etc.

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 18/01/2006 20:46

flipping 'eck I think I need to lie down.....two people agreeing with me in the space of 7 seconds

SnowmAngeliz · 18/01/2006 20:47

HRH, i'm reading '3 in a bed' at the moment and am just starting to realise that. It actually says that in some counties our way is seen as extremely cruel, (putting baby in cot) and as i'm practically co-sleeping full time i'm finding it fascinating.
I can't see how peircing babies is any nicer though. It' just one of those things i cringe at.

My next book btw is attachment parenting
(Honest arrived today from Amazon, i'm just interested in all views)

SnowmAngeliz · 18/01/2006 20:47

ooooh 3, i type slow

hotmama · 18/01/2006 20:48

I thought this was turning into 'one of those threads' hanky stuff and then 3 in a bed.

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 18/01/2006 20:49

I didn't say it was nicer , just that it's one of those cultural things - which unlike things such as female circumcision - don't really run the risk of leaving any long lasting effects (or even killing them) which some of us may not understand (I don't really - but each to their own I say) but isn't really worth getting too stressed over.

Just read that through - not sure it makes any sense.

Going to eat dinner now - shall be intrigued to see if anyone understood it LOL.

SnowmAngeliz · 18/01/2006 20:49
Grin
SnowmAngeliz · 18/01/2006 20:50

No i didn't mean you i meant the cultures who think we are cruel

mixed messages galore!

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 18/01/2006 20:52

oh blimey - I'm totally confused now - definitely time to go and switch the hob off (got a carcass simmering away to make stock) and eat my dinner before going to work LOL.

Blandmum · 18/01/2006 20:52

A couple of year ago my kids went to play in a creche and there was a sign asking for all 'piercings' to be removed before they entered the soft play area. I asked , 'Earings, then?' and the worker told me that she had seen 5 year olds with belly buttons done!

Mega Yuck! How crazy is this?

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 18/01/2006 20:53

MB - now that is wierd !

Blandmum · 18/01/2006 20:56

I was myself I can tell you!

She was quite serious though!

daisy1999 · 18/01/2006 20:58

so cruel

staceym11 · 18/01/2006 21:07

i cant understand the reasoning behind having a babies ears pierced, the damn thing cry so much already!!! lol

my mil threatened to get dds done when she was 2 month and we left her with her overnight, dp threatened that if she did she'd never see dd again, i think she weighed it up and decided against it as in the morning when we picked her up there was no holes in her ears!!!

but when shes older and she wants them il let her get them done, i was 3 for my first holes and was desperate for them, mum relented and i never complained, cried or whinged about them, i now have 2 holes in one ear and 3 in the other and only wear earings when i go out (generally studs), i have never had another piercing (apart from ears) but do have a tatoo of a tiger with my dds name underneath. i doubt anyone would ever think of tattoing a child and dont really agree with ear piercing when they are really young, but who are we to judge, none of us are 'right' all the time!!!!
