My passport runs out in September so I decided to renew it now so that if i go away around Aprilish, it will still be valid 6 months after my return date which seems to be the law now.
Anyway, 10 years ago, I was much much slimmer and my passport photo was actually very flattering so I was dreading having to have a new one with a new horrible picture of myself in it. Turns out that if you are renewing and you still have some months to go on it, you can just send the passport with a couple of new passport photographs up - no having to go round begging for countersignatories!- as long as your appearance hasn't changed too drastically. Well, I went to the p/o today and asked the woman on the counter what I should do and also whether she thought my old photograph was passable. Her reply was that she wasn't allowed to tell what I should do about my picture but that she thought it still looked like me. So I filled the form in and chanced it. Now i'm regretting it as obviously in another 10 years time i'm going to look different again- although it has given me a great incentive to lose loads of weight!Does anyone know if the passport people will compare the new pictures to the old one or have I just paid out alot of money when I should have put a bit more thought into it? Sorry so long and boring but I feel a bit stupid to be honest!

This is why I still haven't got around to renewing mine, which has a 1995 picture in it... sorry, no advice but good luck and I know the feeling!

moondog · 18/01/2006 14:12

lol
That is so bloody vain!
My father renewed mine once when I was about 15.
In those days, rules were lax soi as I wasn't about,he hacked my face and shoulders out of a ideous shot of me with lots of spots and sporting an angora jumper in front of a Christmas tree.
Minging!!

Had to look at it for ten years.
You could even see the baubles and tinsel behind me.

I got dh to photoshop me in some more hair to cover my luminous forehead once

my best one was my first passport picture, I was 17 and scowling in a badly lit booth in Woolies; I looked like Myra Hindley

fuzzywuzzy · 18/01/2006 14:14

The passport photo is why I've still to renew my passport.
But I wouldn't worry about not looking like the photo in a decade, as both dd's had their passports done when they were a matter of weeks old, and they look nothing like the photo, forget how they'll look at five which is when their passports will need to be renewed.

WideWebWitch · 18/01/2006 14:14

Well I can't until I renew it, but obv by this summer will be thin and gorgeous, obv.

WideWebWitch · 18/01/2006 14:15

Cor sw, if they'll accept photoshopped images then maybe I should crack on and do it, dh is a whizz on it

You could do what a friend of mine did...she had her hair and makeup professionally styled on the day she had her most recent passport photo taken!

moondog · 18/01/2006 14:15

My ds was 8 days when hew had his done.
Looks like an overcooked prawn.

Mytwopenceworth · 18/01/2006 14:16

so sorry because you obviously are troubled by this, but where exactly does the vanity come into it, since you say you look much better in the photo than rl at the moment? I mean, obviously your passport will not be representing you abroad, you will be going with it, so people will be looking at photo then you then photo? so by putting an old photo on your passport - when people are actually seeing you and comparing you with it, what are you acheiving? i'm not sure i understand.

cutekids · 18/01/2006 14:16

My wedding pictures were lovely too! (but that was eleven years ago!!!!!)

Take it i've been a bit hasty then, haven't I?!
Do you think the passport office will look at the new photos (loose with no signatures on) and just send the whole lot back to me to do again?
Does anyone work in a passport office?

Plus, it's quite hard to get a countersignatory isn't it? Apparently, not only do people have to say that this is a true likeness of you etc. and sign, they also have to put their passport no. on aswell. Can't see teachers etc. being keen to do that in a hurry! Also-according to woman in post office-doctors charge approx.£10 to do it!!!
