Dog poo rant!!!

marthamoo · 13/11/2003 11:19

My parents just dropped in and managed to tread dog poo all over my living room floor. Because some stferbrains irresponsible dog-owner has let their beloved pooch cp right outside my front door, various people have already stood in it so it's spread all over the pavement (door opens straight onto street from front room - no buffer zone). So after I had cleaned inside I was out on the pavement with bleach and hot water trying to swill it away before dh brings some in too.

I am not well, already feel like death warmed up..spent Monday night with the lovely sickness and diarrhoea bug that seems to be doing the rounds, spent last night looking after ds1 as he threw up about a hundred times. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO CLEAN UP AFTER OTHER PEOPLES' FLAMING DOGS!!!!

Do you think the same people who let their dogs poo on the pavement, in parks, and on school playing fields would be quick to object if I threw the contents of my toddler's dirty nappies out on the street?

OOOOOOOH...I HATE THEM!!!!!!!

OK, need to lie down now. Rant over.

Droile - lets hope he doesn't misfire and shoot a child! I just think that sounds incredibly dangerous. I wouldn't like to live near him!

Would dog sh*t really cause gangrene even after treatment and cleaning at the hospital?

whymummy · 13/11/2003 14:37

our dog poos in the back garden too,we put a fence and gate so she can't do it in the grass area, she does it on the concrete bit and dh cleans it with bleach every day,i once counted 23 dog s**ts on our way to school

Clarinet60 · 13/11/2003 14:49

M2T, Whether it was the cause or not, dog poo got into his wound and he had an amputation, so there's a strong association in his mind. It would gross you out big time, wouldn't it.

As for the children, well, I'm kind of glad, because it gives me a massive excuse not to let them wander the fields alone when they're bigger, like we did when we were small. Reckon he's done he a favour there, as otherwise I'd have had to spend hours following them from a distance.

suedonim · 13/11/2003 16:19

I agree that it's the owners at fault, not the poor dogs. My dog, if she goes when we're on a walk, uses the road rather than the pavement and I always, always, always, pick it up in a doggy bag anyway. I don't know the lawe in England but you can now be fined gbp40 for not cleaning up after your dog. Quite right, too.

MInd you, I find the human vomit that is on the city pavements at weekends almost as bad. I just managed to stop my dd from walking into a lake of the stuff recently, yuk.

doormat · 13/11/2003 16:21

yes suedonim the vomit is horrible and so are the condoms and dirty nicks

ds stood on another coming from school today!!i'm sick of it,i'm putting plastic bags on their feet tomorrow!!!

bunny2 · 13/11/2003 19:30

Im with Droile and hmb, if a dog was merrily crapping by my gate on a daily basis, I'd be there with boiling water at the very least. Soory dog lovers but I just dont care enough about them when they are putting children at risk of disease.

anais · 13/11/2003 20:34

Did I miss wifeswap with Jade????

anais · 13/11/2003 20:37

Hang on a minute Bunny, as others have pointed out, it's not the dogs' fault. If you want to take it out on anyone, take it out on the owners.

Dahlia · 13/11/2003 20:46

I think boiling water is a bit cruel! The poor dog can't help its bodily functions! It is entirely up to the owners - poor the boiling water on them. I was gardening the other day - never wear gloves as I like to get my hands dirty a la Alan Titchmarsh - some tw*t had let their dog get in my garden and I plunged my hands into a pile of poo! I was nearly sick. Irresponsible dog owners do my head in.

Metrobaby · 14/11/2003 09:13

I also agree that it is the owners fault and not the dogs. I have often seen owners letting their dogs do a poo, whilst hurridly looking all around them and then dragging their dog off pronto - guilty conscience maybe ? And having fines for letting your dog foul the pavement is all very well and good but would you report the owners ? Surely they could deny it ?? Also what about the owners who let dogs foul parks or open spaces?

Whymummy - with that many dog poos on the pavement you could always request your local council to clean the streets. I do when I only see one !

whymummy · 14/11/2003 09:20

metrobaby i have phoned the council in many occassions but nothing's been done,is a disgrace after all the money we pay on council tax,i've also sent a letter to the local paper

M2T · 14/11/2003 09:30

Steady on Bunny!! Would you pour boiling water over a child if it's mother put dirty nappies on the pavement????

A tad extreme perhaps. Oh... and you'd go to jail for it.

Queenie · 14/11/2003 09:53

I think dogs should wear nappies as fining the owners doesn't work - so if you want to walk your doggy in public put a nappy and a muzzle and a lead on it. Does that sound mad?? :0) My worst dog poo experience was this time last year when dd had just turned 2 and wanted to play on the big slide in the park. Ds was about 6 weeks old so I didn't watch her as she came down the slide. When I looked at her her whole back was dog poo as someone with a great sense of humour (not) had smeared it down the slide. Luckily I was wet wiped up (new baby and all) and managed to clean most of it off. Now if I had met that person I'd have rubbed their nose it in with glee.

whymummy · 14/11/2003 10:08

i've just sent an email to two different council offices, our way to school takes 1/2h and we walk through 4 differnt streets, one belongs to another borough,i also wonder wether all those nasty stomach bugs are caused by kids standing on poo and then taking it to school with them and sitting-playing on the floor,dd's nursery wich is also a school makes all the kids wear sleepers inside,i think is a very good idea

Clarinet60 · 14/11/2003 11:07

Slippers in nursery are a good idea. I don't like wearing shoes indoors full stop. Nappies for dogs are also a great idea and I've been thinking that for a while. It would be antisocial to take a baby out with a bare bottom, and some dog owners can't seem to take responsibility, so nappy up the lot, I say.

One of the worst cases I've seen was dog owners (loads of them) taking their dogs to poo on a children's football pitch in Barnstaple. I stood and watched it with my mouth open for ages - I know I should have challenged them all, but it just turns into a slanging match. Playing football involves falling over and rolling around on the ground, and that ground was covered in dog poo, ffs.

coppertop · 14/11/2003 11:16

I hate the owners who actually use the "PLAY AREA - NO FOULING" signs to lean on while they wait for their dog to finish sh*ing everywhere. These people have no shame.

hmb · 14/11/2003 11:24

Out of interest I did a quick online search on the topic of dog poo (sad, I'm off work sick!) It is estimated that in the Uk dogs produce 1000tons of poo every day! And from walking round the strees where I live it would seem that large amounts of it aren't picked up by owners.

The local football ground , used by school teams near us is used as a dog toilet by large numbers of dog owners. I assume that they don't want their dogs to crap in their gardens, because then they would have to clean up after them.

Other posters are right, it is the owners fault, but dog shit is a dreadful problem, and a real danger to the health of out children. It is estimated that each pile of poo can contain 100 million toxicara eggs. It is true that dogs do not pose this risk if they are wormed regularly, but I'd bet that the sort of owners that let their dogs crap wherever they like are not reponsible enough to worm them.

suedonim · 14/11/2003 11:51

There was dog poo all over the floor inside one of our shopping malls, a couple of weeks ago. It was busy and suddenly there was a big human traffic jam, as everyone stopped moving. When we eventually got to where the hold-up was, muck was spread everywhere across the floor and of course, people were despertately trying to avoid it. How on earth it was inside, I don't know, but it must have been a d*mn big dog.

wobblyknicks · 14/11/2003 12:07

What about if there were small patches of ground fenced off especially for dogs to poo in, like tiny parks? Then there could be a huge fine (forget 40 quid, how about 1000 quid?) for lettin a dog poo anywhere else. And also, if a member of the public caught the offender on camera, they would get half the fine paid to them. So the council wouldn't have to bother catching them, the public would benefit, dog owners would be more responsible, and dog owners who are already responsible wouldn't get caught because of course they'd clean it up immediately. Perfect!

bobsmum · 14/11/2003 12:26

I agree with Wobblyknicks' idea of a separate area. I'm sure I've seen a couple of parks with that kind of fenced off bit before but I can't remember where - it was like a dogs' playground.

Do you still need a dog licence? Could there not be poop bags kept in locked boxes in parks etc and all dog owners could be given a key to use them? Canal boat owners have access to all sorts of locked utilities which all have the same universal key. Then there would be no excuses of "Oh I forgot to bring a bag.."

M2T · 14/11/2003 12:38

No dog lisences required anymore.

We have LOADS of the dogshtting areas (as we have christened them) around our are. With a red and black dogsht bin. They have a little fence separating it from the rest of the parks and a few scatterings of treelings. They are quite common around where I live and they do get used. I thought they were everywhere?

wobblyknicks · 14/11/2003 12:40

None round where I live!

M2T · 14/11/2003 12:42

There was one in the playpark we hung around as kids. When I was about 15 yrs old we sent fire to the sh*tbin.... BOY did it go up!!

Not clever, I know.... but just shows you how long they've been around up here! That was 10 yrs ago.
