Did you see all the anti-english stuff in teh press before the game..most people would rather France won.. I got really upset about it. This from a nation who are largely descended from England (if european) and still won't eat french food because of certain nuclear testing...sore losers and severe short term memory loss I think. Have to post rantings here as can't upset DH too much, am ttc and day 13 at the moment - can't afford for him to be in mourning and P**off (think smiley)

eidsvold · 16/11/2003 21:40

please sibble - lets not argue australian history - the english may have sent their trash to Australia but we used those social scraps and made something of it...

lets not talk about a nation that worked hard at the systematic genocide of an indigenous nation ( including removing body parts after death and sending them back to England for people to pour over coming to ridiculous conclusions regarding their skull size and apparent lack of intelligence).... Stolen generation..... need I say more......

lets not talk about a nation that was happy to take our generations of young men to fight wars that were none of our business but when we were being directly attacked these men were largely not allowed to return to Asia to protect aus but were kept in Europe.....

Lets not mention rabbits or foxes........

We may also be anti British also thanks to Maralinga ........

As to French food - do you blame us they are happy to destroy beautiful islands in the pacific to test nuclear weapons... However the most anti french sentiment I have experienced was in England...

and at least the KIWIS had the guts to tell the Uk to take their nuclear subs elsewhere..... rather than accepting their toxic rubbish to sit in their ports for the winter what is that all about?!?!?

Oh and I think you will find that the majority of Aussies are in fact no longer descendants of the Brits.....

and hey if us aussies are so horrible why the hell do most poms want to come and live in Australia.....

but like I said lets not argue history!!!

Oh but Ghsoty could you teach Johnny how to go to the bathroom before the game instead of straining on the pitch?!?!?! What is that about??

Oh and can I add - I was Wendell Sailors' English teacher way back when.....

eidsvold · 16/11/2003 21:41

oops sorry Ghosty - that is what I meant to type......

Ghosty · 16/11/2003 22:06

Oh Eidsvold ... I think Sibble was talking about the anti English feeling in NZ ... not Australia ... let's not have a row
I think the majority of European kiwis ARE descended from the English ... and I know that is no longer the case in Australia ... afterall the population of Australia is much bigger than that of NZ .... and the country is somewhat older ...
I see your point about lots of Brits wanting to come and live in Aus and NZ ... true ... but why do the Australians and New Zealanders have to knock the Brits so much? ... as an English person living in NZ it can get a bit much to be honest and nearly every other person I meet is either a kiwi married to a Brit or the other way round or they came to NZ as children.
But let's not get into an argument about all of that ... like you say ... that would not be good
The thing that gets to me is the complete inability of the NZ and Australian commentators to acknowledge that England is a formidable team ... Througout the whole tournament they have knocked the English team ... and all this Wilkinson 24 - France 7 crap winds me up sooo much ... Yes Johnny is the best flyhalf in the world at the moment and England is lucky to have him but without the back up of the rest of the team he wouldn't be able to do what he does. Why shouldn't the game be won on drop goals and penalties? It is part of the game is it not? That is how the game works ... if you can't get through the defence then have a shot at goal ...
That is why I love the game so much ... so much better than boring old football!
There was an article in the NZ Herald (that quality paper!) a few weeks ago ... an interview with an ex Scotland captain (name escapes me at the moment) ... who said that New Zealand and Australia will not be able to beat England until they acknowledge them as the best team in the world and show them some respect instead of making excuses as to why they manage to beat people ....
The proof will be in the pudding on Saturday won't it??

Ghosty · 16/11/2003 22:09

PS ... when I next speak to Johnny I will talk to him about his problem with constipation ...
Did you know that apparently he looks through the posts and imagines that he can see a woman ... called Doris ... and he kicks the ball to her?
Did I ever tell you my real name

Lethal · 16/11/2003 22:35

eidsvold I might be mistaken but I thought sibble was referring to the kiwis in her last post (since there is absolutely NO resistance to eating French food in Australia that I'm aware of!!!!). Sibble - yes the French were severely "bagged" in the Aust/NZ press a few years ago due to the nuclear testing in the Pacific, but they absolutely deserved it... testing nuclear weapons in one of the most beautiful, pristine places on earth, which happened to be right in OUR backyard, so to speak. There was a boycott on French wines at the time, I do remember, because everyone here was so p**d off about it. Let the French test their weapons their own backyard, I say

Is there really a lot of anti-Australian sentiment in England??!! Just wondering - I thought some of the Brits might be proud of the sporting prowess of their colonial cousins down under Although... people like Shane Warne probably don't help our image very much...

Anyway let's keep this to rugby hey? Should be a great final, I'll be draped in the Southern Cross too, eidsvold - GO THE WALLABIES

Lethal · 16/11/2003 22:48

Ghosty I know how you feel about England being 'knocked' in the Aust/NZ press, but I am absolutely positive that Australians would receive the same treatment in the English press!!! I must admit I get really bugged by the perception that Australia is a brash, cocky, beer-swilling, sports-obsessed nation (yes there is a certain 'element' of that, but in the minority.) Most of us do not fit that desciption at all - this really is a very civilised country you know!! It's come a long, long way over the years and I feel we have much to be proud of. As does England too.

Anyway - yes, we shall try to keep this topic on the rugby & not digress into all sorts of other areas...

Ghosty · 16/11/2003 23:25

Lethal ... I agree ... every country has stereotypes don't they? ....
So, are you like Kath or more like Kim ... he he he he

Lethal · 16/11/2003 23:32

Uh.... let's see... definitely not Kim!!! And nothing like Kath either I have to say! Although I think Kath is such a sweetie

OH - and I'm definitely not Sharon either.

That show is like a 'caricature' (sp?) if you like, of a certain segment of Australian suburbia - but very exaggerated of course!! Totally brings out the 'cringe' factor in all of us (kind of like Steve Irwin's accent)

sibble · 17/11/2003 01:54

I think there must have been some misunderstanding in my post that has lost me somewhere - my posting was refering to NZ press where I am currently living and had no reference at all to Aus. It was intended as tongue in cheek because I do find it rather ironic that those who are descended from the english and (quite rightly) boycott french goods (DH included) would rather have had France win than England. I have yet to get my head around why....
My only reference to Aus was that we are going to whip their arses in the final, which in a very sportsman like way and being English I hope we do.

sibble · 17/11/2003 02:04

oh and I forgot DH has now announced that England did not really win in his book because no tries were scored against France..apparantly anybody can win by drop kicks...the challenge is to score tries...
Now what is all that about?????
I can just see Saturday DS and I in our England shirts and DH in the corner in his black armband looking like he has sucked a kilo of lemons (champion gurner).
I am kidding of course - game will be on 10-midnight here I think and I cannot function after 9.30!!!

Ghosty · 17/11/2003 02:53

Sibble ... you don't seriously mean to say that you are NOT going to watch the game??? I have sat up and watched nearly every England game so far ... except the early pool ones ...
I am shocked and speechless that you can show such little support for your mother country ... mind you - I do understand that you have other things on your mind that you have to keep your strength up for
BTW ... if your DH thinks that (bless him!) can you ask him why they HAVE drop goals at all in the rules? ... if the only point was to score tries why not make all other ways of scoring obsolete??
PS ... my DH thinks it is hilarious that there is a discussion about the World Cup on Mumsnet
PPS ... he also says no one is talking to him at work

Ghosty · 17/11/2003 02:55

LOL at champion gurner

sibble · 17/11/2003 04:13

ghosty - the workings of Dh's mind are only to be wondered at and not analysed. He is still waiting for his calling to the All Blacks team. Considering he will be closer to 50 than 40 by the time the next world cup rolls around he didn't take kindly to my suggestion that he could only play if it was a 'dad's army' version.
Far from me to try to wind him up but DS and I have been practicing our 'ENGLAND' chanting all day. Pronounced in football fashion - 'ingerland'... he is even having lessons from my sister over the phone who is an avid sports fan...
Oh the shame on this site if we (dare I say it) lose next weekend.

sob sob sob.....
anyone give me a hug?

Frenchgirl · 17/11/2003 11:21

OK, we lost, I have to get over it if no one will hug me....pretty please?????

JanZ · 17/11/2003 12:15

I'll give you a hug: {{{{ {}}}}}. When France are on form, they play magnificent rugby.

I was rooting for a NZ - France final, which would have been great rugby.

As it is, I think England will win (God, we'll never hear the end of it ) - Johhny Wilkinson is brilliant, and in that respect they will deserve it (and as a Scot, it pains me to say that), but it's not pretty rugby. Where are the tries?

sibble · 17/11/2003 18:15

hug for you too frenchgirl

Frenchgirl · 17/11/2003 18:28

thank you JanZ and sibble!!!
(and it was an ugly kicking match....)

Ghosty · 18/11/2003 01:10

Hugs from me too Frenchgirl .... {{{}}}
If it is any consolation I do feel that the French team had a certain 'Je ne sais quoi' on the field in terms of Style ... The colour of the kit ... their little bottoms looking dead sexy in those little blue shorts ... and TBH (apart from Johnny Wilkinson - Eng, Carlos Spencer and Dougie Howlett - NZ) they are by far the best looking team ...
Not bad at Rugby either ...

Frenchgirl · 18/11/2003 10:28

Ghosty, I can tell you enjoyed the game

Ghosty · 21/11/2003 19:27

Frenchgirl ... Thursday night's game was a good 'un too wasn't it? Sorry the French didn't win ... but very glad the All Blacks did ... although they have now sacked their coach

Anyhoo ... ladies ... only 13 and a half hours before the big game ....
10pm kick off for us ... 9am kick off for you lot in the UK ... who's going to be watching???

Watch out Aussies ...

Swing looooooow.......
