If so, just wondered if you know whether or not they accept sites published from Frontpage?

Thanks

They should do. They accept pictures etc.

HellyBelly · 13/01/2006 15:18

Just wondered as I'm doing it for someone else and I don't know the publish destination (i.e. Tiscali's is ftp://ftp.myweb.tiscali.co.uk). I've tried guessing it and it's coming up with an error message which could be it doesn't accept Frontpage (some don't) or I've got it wrong!

Anyone know what the publish destination should be?

(thinking about it HB!) I'll check with DH when he gets in. He's gone to B&Q, a kid in a toy store!

HellyBelly, sorry for long delay in answering you. I've asked DH and he says this is what you need. Hopefully it will make sense to you!

upload.ntlworld.com her ntl username then password

so e.g ours is upload.ntlworld.com______ntlworld.comPasswordhere

Give us a shout if it don't work and I'll ask again! He does 4 websites and uploads all our ebay pics, it's just me who can't explain very well!!

tribpot · 13/01/2006 18:52

I'm sure NTL make it virtually impossible to find out what their ftp site is called (where you upload pics and so on) so that you will 'have' to take their FTP application, which is chargeable after 30 days.

I had to download it to find out that it was upload.ntlworld.com etc. etc. and have never used it since!

HellyBelly · 13/01/2006 18:57

Thanks for that, unfortunately it didn't work.

I know that NTL's website says 'we recommend you use the ntlworld FTP browser powered by Terrapin' but I want to do it nice and easy using Frontpage's own publishing option. Do you know if your dh follows NTL's recommendations? If so, this is probably the difference?

FYI, This is how I do it on Frontpage with Tiscali (as an example):

Click: publish web
type: ftp://ftp.myweb.tiscali.co.uk
then: username
then: password

Don't worry if he does it different and can't help, I appreciate you taking the time to respond

HellyBelly · 13/01/2006 19:02

tribpot - cheers for that.

As I offer a cheap service for these customers I also say they can save money if they have free webspace but most of the time I have to look into the details for them. With NTL, I couldn't find the info anywhere - now I know why .

Do you know if the charge after 30 days only applies if you need to use it after the initial 30 days is up? Having said that, they'll want updates so I'd need it to do these anyway! Will tell customer that the only way I can use her own webspace is by using their FTP and paying £19.99. Suppose it's still better than paying an annual hosting fee.

What did you think of NTL's FTP then? Just curious

mumatuks · 13/01/2006 19:16

Hi HellyBelly,

Mumatuck's DH here..

I'm hoping it should be this easy. If this doesn't work, please CAT me.

Click: publish web
type: upload.ntlworld.com
then: username
then: password

We use FTP Explorer here which works really well (there's no need for NTL sponsored products!)

tribpot · 13/01/2006 19:17

No no, HB, absolutely no need whatsoever to use their FTP tool. They just deliberately withhold the information so that you have no choice but to download it .. and then of course the vast majority of people will think they have to use to it and carry on when the trial period runs out. Ho ho. No chance.

I use SmartFTP myself, rather than publish from Frontpage or whatever (of course I edit my HTML in Notepad anyway, ha ha!)

It should work with:

type: ftp upload.ntlworld.com (note, no ftp:// bit)
then: username
then: password

Just tried that from a DOS prompt and it worked fine. However, Frontpage may be a bit odd .. might have a go at that too.

HellyBelly · 13/01/2006 19:18

Hello mumatuks dh!

Will CAT you after I've checked the lady has definitely given the right details as that's what I've been putting in Frontpage

Thanks for your help, never rated NTL anyway!

OP posts:
tribpot · 13/01/2006 19:19

Ah yes, well done mumatucks. My ftp at the beginning isn't necessary if you're already using an ftp application. Should work!

tribpot · 13/01/2006 19:21

Maybe try it from a DOS prompt HB, it sounds like she's given you the wrong username/password.

Go to Start then Run and type cmd

That will open a DOS window (black screen as of days of yore).

Then just type what I had written the first time, ftp upload.ntlworld.com

Various bits of text will follow from NTL, then type the username, then it will ask for the password. That way you can see what error it's reporting.

Hope that makes sense?

tribpot · 13/01/2006 19:22

btw, then type quit to close the session and exit!

mumatuks · 13/01/2006 19:23

Tribpot. .you've got DH wanting to try that now!

HellyBelly · 13/01/2006 19:24

Must admit, didn't want to use some stupid tool when I don't need to - I've had this with another provider but managed to get round it .

Thanks for your help, you can see I'm not used to having to use FTP tools - like to do it the easy way if I can!

Will double check her details and see if that's the problem.

tribpot - SmartFTP good then? Does it cost or can you get a free download?

OP posts:
tribpot · 13/01/2006 19:25

What, ftp from a command window? I think your dh needs to get out a bit more mumatucks

However, it is v useful to know how to do that stuff, for precisely this kind of reason.

HellyBelly · 13/01/2006 19:26

Just seen your post. Tried that, it connected to Ntl and then says connection closed by remote host?

OP posts:
tribpot · 13/01/2006 19:29

How odd. Before it asked you for the username? Would it be awful to ask what the username is so I can try it? (Obv not expecting you to give me the password)

SmartFTP is good, but only free for non-commercial use. (Officially)

mumatuks · 13/01/2006 19:30

poor guy, its me who keeps him locked up in here! I have been known to say "come one this is all a bit geeky" but when I need info like this I can't fault him!!

(whispering) *HB, if you CAT me then I'll get DH to zip a file of FTP and send it to you. We got ours whilst it was still free! Thats if you want it, sounds naffer than a pair of old y fronts from what I've read!!

HellyBelly · 13/01/2006 19:33

tribpot - great offer but I think I should get agreement from her first as I don't know how she'd feel. If she agrees (don't know her but worth asking) then I'll CAT you rather than posting

Off to sort ds out for a mo but thanks SOOO much for your time and I'll be back

OP posts:
tribpot · 13/01/2006 19:36

Absolutely HellyBelly. Sounds reasonable.

Incidentally, I tried the following:

  • logged in as myself but typed in the wrong password. Got the message "login incorrect"

  • logged in as a made-up user (unless there really is someone out there who chose 'miraculousavocad0') it then asked for a password but when I typed one in, it said "connection closed by remote host".

I reckon therefore she's given you the wrong username.

HellyBelly · 14/01/2006 13:03

Thanks for that, will check with her now as I've got my pc back (dh knicked it last night and this morning so I couldn't come back and sort this - he's applying for jobs and stuff so I'll let him off )

OP posts:
HellyBelly · 14/01/2006 15:15

Sorry tribpot, when you said you thought it was the username that was wrong, is that because of a message in DOS? Reason I ask is because mine never got as far as asking for user details.

Double checked her name but still not working

OP posts:
tribpot · 14/01/2006 16:01

Yes, HB. What happened when you did it in DOS? You typed ftp upload.ntlworld.com and it did a few bits and bobs like this:

220-
220-##################################################################
220-
220- Welcome to upload.ntlworld.com
220-
220-##################################################################
220-
220 upload.ntlworld.com FTP server ready

then it asks for the user - are you saying before it got to that it closed the connection?
