Hi you SAHMs out there! What's a typical day like for you?

OP posts:
Bomper · 12/01/2006 17:36

7.00am - all three children get up, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh - ssssssssssstttttttttttttrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeessssssssssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8.00pm - all three children are in bed.

MrsMiggins · 12/01/2006 19:42

have to say that I went out to tea on Tues having picked mu kids up from nursery
also there were 2 SAHMs plus their kids

I was relaxed and my kids were loving & happy

my poor friends seemed ready to drop and their kids tired

it is far easier going to work (well my job is) than looking after the kids but definitely less rewarding

chipkid · 12/01/2006 19:58

ahh mrs miggins I have just returned to work (2nd day today) after 18 months as a stay at hoem mum-I am an emotional wreck!!!!!!!!!!!!

milward · 12/01/2006 19:59

boomper your day is like mine!

ghosty · 12/01/2006 20:02

We are on summer holidays at the moment but this is what a typical term day is like ...

6.30am I wake up and get in the shower
While I am in the shower the children usually wake up and DH gets them their breakfast.
7am I make packed lunch for DS and get him ready for school and do houseworky stuff
8.15am we leave the house to walk DS to school
9am DD and I get back home
9am - 10am DD and I chill at home (I do housework and check my emails, DD plays)
10am most days we go out (shopping, go to see people, playgroup etc.)
12 DD and I are back home, have lunch
12.30 DD goes to have a nap and I spend the next two hours working from home (She goes to Creche on Thursday and Friday mornings and I work then too)
2.30 I wake DD up and we walk up to school to pick up DS
3.15pm Home again
Mondays we go to DS' swimming lesson
Wednesdays we stay at school for DS' soccer.
Tuesdays and Thursdays are 'playdate' days either someone comes to us or DS goes to someone' house.
On home days we do his reading and homework and play in the garden.
5pm I start organising dinner
6pm the children eat (DS sometimes eats with us later)
6pm DH arrives home
6 - 6.30pm DH plays with kids while I try to ignore them
6.30pm DH usually baths kids
6pm DD goes to bed and then we spend some time with DS
8pm DS goes to bed
8.30pm DH and I eat and collapse in front of the telly or if there is nothing on he watches sport and I go on Mumsnet
10.30pm we go to bed

I have bored myself rigid typing that out .... I'll get me coat ...

ghosty · 12/01/2006 20:04

7pm DD goes to bed, not 6pm ...

ghosty · 12/01/2006 20:22

I killed it didn't I?

ha ha ha ha .... bored you all stupid ....

chipkid · 12/01/2006 20:49

ghosty sounds exactly like my day....before I returned to work ahhhhh

Mercy · 12/01/2006 21:10

ghosty, your days sound very productive compared to mine.

Tantrums rule the day atm

morningpaper · 12/01/2006 21:30

Have a 3 year old and a 3 month old. Days are fairly structured - usually have 1 going-out or people-coming-over activity per day. I plan to leave the house about an hour before I need to and I try to avoid stress by taking things as slowly as possible.

The main difference between having one and having two has been that I now have to start cooking dinner at 4pm instead of 5pm (we eat at 6pm).

Thomcat · 12/01/2006 21:31

Thomcat your post has made me broody

Thomcat · 12/01/2006 21:39

PMSL! My nipples are sore, and my mastistus isn't completley gone, my eye bags are looking fab,-not! Does that make you less broody?

chickenrice · 12/01/2006 22:00

You lot sound very organisized. Getting up at 6.30am, Ghosty? Wow! I must confess I wake up about 8.30 and have a shower and breakfast because my lazy DS sleeps until 9.30am. Then, he has breakfast and we go to playgroup, etc. I get back and cook him and myself lunch. He has that and then sleeps. Gives me a bit of time to do a little (and I mean little housework) although I do end up on Mumsnet. He wakes up and we play or go to meet more kids. When we return, I make him some dinner or play with him until DH returns. DH and I cook while DS watches a bit of telly or plays. Then we have dinner, followed by a little playtime. He has a bath about 8pm and then is asleep by 9pm. Sometimes this happens an hour earlier. Then DH and I watch tv/a dvd, then we go to bed. Lately, however, I am up late on the net. I blame Mumsnet for having a great site! All this can get a bit boring. Sometimes I miss work but when I think of DH having to leave early and how I get to sleep on, I am quite glad that I am not working. I do feel like I am not doing enough with my day, eg more housework or cooking but how do you do that with a toddler around? Any tips? Mercy, mine's going through the tantrum stage too. Any tips?

Sorry about the duplicate post. My mouse went funny. Too much clicking.

Mercy · 12/01/2006 22:14

Chickenrice, it's bloody hard to get anything done when your toddler is going through the tantrum stage! My house has been a tip for years!

ds has to adhere to a routine (of sorts) as dd is now in reception class, so he has to wake up, eat and nap at a certain times of the day.

As for tantrums, make sure they are in a safe place - and ignore them. Easier said than done I know, but you soon will get the hang of it. With dd I used to give a 5 minute warning, eg we are leaving the park in 5 mins, 5 more mins in the bath etc. It worked with her, but ds doesn't understand at all atm. I make it up as I go along tbh, but I still ignore most of his tantrums

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 12/01/2006 22:21

codnotamod · 12/01/2006 22:21

god this is dull

eidsvold · 12/01/2006 22:28

depends on the day for us - some days are kindy, others swimming, or therapy or whatever... so a kindy day

5.30pm - breastfeed dd2
6 - 6.30am - get up with dd1
breakfast about 7am

showers, baths etc to get out of the house by 8.45

drop dd1 off at kindy at 9am

shop until 11.15 - time to pick dd1 up again
home - babes have lunch and sleep

do whatever needs doing or nothing depending on my mood

wake about 2.30 - afternoon tea
play
get dh from train about 5pm

babies fed and in bed between now and 7pm

dh and I have dinner
tv/mumsnet or just veg out

bed around 10.30ish

somedays we have appts in the afternoon or catch up with friends or they come to play or vice versa...

sounds boring but most days I barely have time to scratch myself - take a bit of time out for mumsnet whilst they are asleep or watching her tv allocation - wiggles of course.

Passionflower · 12/01/2006 22:57

OMG that's long sorry!

Mytwopenceworth · 12/01/2006 22:59

are we competing? does the person with the most hectic day get a trophy or just a big round of applause?

Passionflower · 12/01/2006 23:04

A round of applause will do fine Am just reminding myself that I don't sit in front of daytime telly all day drinking gin and eating choccies like DH is convinced I do

Mytwopenceworth · 12/01/2006 23:07

well, I get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night half an hour before I go to bed.......

  • wonder how many people are old / daft enough to know what the hell I am on about!!!
