Changing surname...

Hi all,

for some time I have wanted to change my son and I's surname. It is my maiden name and we have next to no contact with my family and my darling sons father is not involved. My son is still young, so it would not inconvenience him at this stage.

Has anyone else changed their surname, did you experience any issues or later regrets ?

I was also wondering if my son, when he gets older would be ok with a choosen name, as opposed to an inherited name. What do you think ? Opinions greatly appreciated xx

What do you want to change it to?

KingsleysMummy · 20/12/2011 03:37

Hi, santastophere thanks for your reply x

Hi to spiderlegs too, I love the surname Hamilton, it seems to fit quite well with my sons first name, though perhaps a short and sweet surname would be best.

So you're going to pick a random surname?

KingsleysMummy · 20/12/2011 04:16

Yes, a random name. Do you think this is wrong?

Errrm - yes - random is wrong.

What's wrong with the original?

KingsleysMummy · 20/12/2011 04:44

Interesting that you say a random name is wrong - may I ask why you feel it is wrong?

Why not pick something random? Perfectly reasonable thing to do IMO - a new family name for you and your son sounds lovely OP.

KingsleysMummy · 20/12/2011 04:55

Hi felicitywits, Thanks for your comment xx

Hi, i think its a perfectly reasonable idea.
Ex Dh changed his surname by deedpoll to a random name he liked and used as a stage name. DD1 and 2 will never change their name when married as they like it so muchGrin
DD3 has just changed her surname to DD1 and 2s name as she likes it too(different Dad), even though she is in contact with her Dad.
Me and DS have new hubbys name which tbh is crap. Seemed a bit cheeky to retain my previous married name even though i wanted too!!
Go for it.
Hamilton is a good choice!
Just read my post back and it looks as though i'm a man eaterBlush
Goodluck to you and your DS X

What will you tell your son when he's older? What if he reestablishes contact with his family of origin?
