We're moving to California for a year. My mission at the moment is to find affordable health insurance either with a home provider (BUPA international, £540/month, erm, no thanks) or USA provider (don't understand the jargon). Can anyone offer any tips on good internet sites/health care insurers? Anyone know how much GPs or dentists cost in San Diego per visit? We have two kids plus, all being well, v small baby, so can't afford to skimp on healthchecks, on the other hand, will have to starve ourselves to afford current insurance quotations. Any advice, anyone?
many thanks

I'm currently in America (returning to UK in two days), and would suggest you look at Blue Cross/Blue Shield for health insurance. Also might be worth looking at Fortis and/or Assurant (think one bought out the other).

No idea what a visit to the GP costs, but I went to the dentist last week for a cleaning/check up and it cost $120, but not in California, so no idea of costs there.

Often US health insurance rates are much better if you qualify for some sort of group plan. Do you or your dp/dh have a company who can help with this? Also might be worthwhile asking for recommendations of some insurance brokers who can help you secure coverage. Health insurance is notoriously difficult to secure in the US, and quite pricey....

Good luck - this is likely to be a real challenge...

Many thanks Earlybird - will follow up your recommendations, best of luck moving back to UK!
