Anyone get pregnant using condoms properly?

I'm a bit miffed to learn that a friend is pregnant after using condoms and claiming she was using them properly i.e. her DH always wore one before getting anywhere near her. She doesn't know of one splitting or comning off.

Can this happen? I ask as it is my current method of contraception. How can someone get pregnant when using a barrier method? How do the sperm get in if the condom doesn't split or accidentally come off?????

No method of contraception is 100% guaranteed, even when used properly. There might have been a hole in it, it might have been snagged by a fingernail as they put it on, they may not have been quite so careful with using them every time as they claim to have been.

Yup. That's why we have ds2. No hint of a leak or tear or anything. We were both mystified but they are only something like 98% effective if used properly which means 2 people out of every 100 people using them every year will get pregnant. Quite a lot really. More when you add in those who don't use them properly.

My worst nightmare that is

hey it happens, i am currently 30 weeks pg, with a similar situation. we religiously used condoms since ds2 was born nearly 4 years ago, as didn't want another and was waiting for dh to get his appointment for a vasectomy. we have no memory of one ever splitting, breaking, coming off or any other fiasco. i don't drink so a drunken encounter is out of the question. its just one of those things that you have to accept that no method of contraception is 100% effective, even sterilisation and vasectomy have a failure rate!

If he has started to 'ooze' before the condom goes on (and lots of sperm do escape before orgasm), and he (or you) gets it on hands while putting the condom on, and then puts those hands close to destination baby - bingo!

I have in the dim and distant past got pregnant solely from a 'hands on' accident - so beware - you can get pregnant even from non-penetrative sex, and using a condom 'properly' is a rigorous business. Using condoms with spermicide would help, I expect.

You need to be careful afterwards too - he will be covered in sperm, if it gets on his or your hands then, and then gets transferred.....bingo.
