GP has just diagnosed Littlemad with Autism, on an appt about sinusitis

Littlemad is down with a virus.

Against my better judgement I took him to the Doctors this morning (recently a doctor at this practice refused to accept me saying I was stressed not depressed and sent me away to ask my husband what he thought)

Anyway, GP pokes a digital thermometer at littlemad who rightly (in my opinion) goes 'what are you doing with that?'

Gp says: Does he ALWAYS behave like this? I say no, he's poorly this is out of character...he says hmm and he made a fuss about having his eyes tested didn't he? Have you had any tests done on him? His implication was littlemad has behavioural problems although he then refused to say what sort of test he meant...

I bristle a little to be fair and say no Gpd says, but he's very 'difficult' isnt he. Now Littlemad is a darling and fairly quirky, he's very bright and gets quite focused on things.

Neither he nor I have slept much for the best part of a week.

Now I'm not going 'he's so perfect he can't possibly be autistic' but there is a time and a place for having a conversation of that kind and it's not:

  1. the first time you have met us
  2. During a consultation about SOMETHING else
  3. APPROPRIATE UNLESS I'VE ASKED FOR YOUR ADVICE

Am very cross.

really, very cross, if I wasn't so tired I'd be dangerous me :)

But where does autism come into it? Confused

WorraLiberty · 21/11/2011 14:54

I haven't read all the thread but why is this kid called 'little mad' in nearly all the OP's posts?

It's most annoying

But then again, the whole thread's a little mad considering the GP didn't diagnose anyone with Autism.

DamnBamboo · 21/11/2011 14:57

Why is it entirely reasonably to assume autism?

ArgyMargy · 21/11/2011 14:57

It's the OP that's barking. Why on earth did she visit GP in the first place?? And if anyone says to get antibiotics just think again!

DazzleII · 21/11/2011 15:00

OK, this thread has now gone completely bonkers. Good luck, OP.

LizaTarbucksAuntie · 21/11/2011 15:03

I've explained and apologised for the ill advised use of the word autism, many, many times now.

Littlemad is so called because I used to be called madascheese.

;) Argy, no, not for antibiotics, don't like em.

DamnBamboo · 21/11/2011 15:04

Good luck liza with, err, whatever the problem seems to be.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 21/11/2011 15:12

people who are saying it is reasonable to assume autism should go away and read about what autism actually IS and what the signs are.

Glitterandglue · 21/11/2011 15:15

Genuine question - why is it mad to take your ill child to the doctor's where they may be given antibiotics? Surely the OP couldn't be sure it was a virus until she had taken her kid to the doctor's to find out...

MenopausalHaze · 21/11/2011 15:22

Amen Worra - I'm still not clear on the littlemad thing - but it is highly aggravating. Do you call your DC 'littlelibs'? Do I call mine 'littlemeno'? No.

Very silly thread anyway.

LizaTarbucksAuntie · 21/11/2011 15:26

He may have been given all sorts of things as treatment, Glitter.

He wasn't and thankfully what he has at the moment is a nasty virus and he's off school til his temp stays below 37.

Thanks to everyone who asked about him - sorry I missed doing that before as well.

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 21/11/2011 15:27

Little Worras Grin

Errrr no......

Glitterandglue · 21/11/2011 15:29

Exactly, OP, there are multiple reasons to take your kid to the doctor's when they're ill so I don't know why you're being accused of being barking specifically for taking your kid in the first place...

Ghoulwithadragontattoo · 21/11/2011 15:59

If I were you I'd change "Littlemad's" nickname now that you've changed yours. It sounds like you're being horrible to you son.

HecateGoddessOfTheNight · 21/11/2011 16:04

Can I just point out, in reply to your reply to me Grin that I never said you were being dramatic, nor did I say you were defensive or in denial.

MincePieFlavouredVoidka · 21/11/2011 16:23

I volunteer and give advice at a drop-in centre for parents of children on the autistic spectrum. I have to say that this GP would be the answer to the prayers of many of the parents I work with, who struggle to even get a diagnosis.

I would prefer 100 over-zealous GP's rather than one who wont help a desperate parent.

LizaTarbucksAuntie · 21/11/2011 16:25

Hecate - it was a general reply to a whole bunch of comments at that point - but I was being rather defensive at that point..Grin

Sorry Ghoul- horrible to my son???? ok, there goes someone who has clearly never read a single post I've written before this thread.

OP posts:
LizaTarbucksAuntie · 21/11/2011 16:26

Mincepie, you're very welcome to him, in fact as I've just discovered from my Mum he's a locum at the practice so you may well end up with him at some point.

good luck with that Grin

OP posts:
MincePieFlavouredVoidka · 21/11/2011 16:27

I would be very happy to swap - our GP is an arse!

HecateGoddessOfTheNight · 21/11/2011 16:44

oh, sorry. I thought since you started it with my name, that it was specific to me. Which confused me a bit, since I thought I had been reasonable, supportive and calming Grin

Ghoulwithadragontattoo · 21/11/2011 16:58

LTA - No I don't know your posting history (and I've been on MN a good couple of years). Many people won't know your history either and, in isolation, "Littlemad" does sound unkind. It was fine when it obviously linked to your nickname but now the joke is lost.

LizaTarbucksAuntie · 21/11/2011 17:00

I did start with your name (have now found the post) looks like a missed a sentance out there...

I think at that point I was trying to respond to whole sheaves of comments, it was the fact yours was so reasonable, clam and supportive that resonnated with the ...you've royally bolloxed up here LTA in your choice of thread title.

The final comment wasn't aimed at you at all. Sorry if it came across that way.

OP posts:
HecateGoddessOfTheNight · 21/11/2011 17:04

fair enough. good. I was trying to be helpful and would hate to think you had got that I was criticising you from any of my posts.

LizaTarbucksAuntie · 21/11/2011 17:09

Ghoul, thanks for the feedback I'll bear it in mind, but am pretty much happy that I'm not being remotely unkind or unpleasant to my son. I'm pretty much happy that I'm not an unkind person by any stretch of the imagination.

Hecate, thanks for making the effort to clarify especially on such a bonkers thread, for what it's worth I do appreciate that.

I've made an appointment with a sensible GP for next week to find out what is going on and if there are issues raised I've not been made aware of. I will be able to manage that much better without a poorly 5 year old on my lap.

Perhaps there are concerns in the notes and they have decided to keep an eye on him and this doctor just mentioned it? You seem to refer to your ds in a strange way and say he is unusual and quirky and that his personality is not affecting him in any way so in essence you too are singling him out. Maybe you need to ask right out what he meant
