I saw your name the other day and remembered your thread about getting your room styled. Did you do it? How are all the other plans going?

Oh my god, I've arrived. My very own thread!

Well, I am beginning to get stressed about it, so clearly the day is drawing near...6 December. We have hired a fantastic stately home as a venue, which I was completely against to start with but am now very excited about. All my friends have pitched in and I think its all going to look fabulous. I have my dress - its not a wedding dress but a beautiful long, bias-cut pale coffee coloured evening dress with a pleated insert at the back and an ivory coloured fake fur wrap (very 1930's is the effect I am going for!)

Really looking forward to it - especially the actual wedding bit in the church - anyone got any good hymn suggestions, we have to have THREE - I think one will be a Christmas carol (suggestions for which gratefully received!) and one will be 'Praise my soul the King of Heaven'.

Sorry. Could go on all night about it.

Sobernow, I will email you and you alone some pics of the wedding as a conciliatory peace offering

2 nights at Babington House - yeah, great the treatment rooms have just burnt down - doh!

lilibet · 03/11/2003 20:22

Hyms - I like Tell out my Soul, really good one to sing very loudly! Is it an organ or a group? Carols - In the bleak midwinter, As with Gladness men of old, There's another one that I really like but cant think at the moment? Are you having readings? What are your bridesmaids wearing?
I love weddings!

lilibet, snap. I was wondering this too. Keep us posted Enid, the dress sounds divine. I presume the bar at Babington House escaped the conflagration...

Just had a rummage through my "100 Carols for Choirs" and wondered about the following:

All my heart this night rejoices (based on a German chorale and nice harmonies if you are having a choir)

In the Bleak Midwinter - quiet. In Dulci Jubilo - loud, happy and jolly, like Personent Hodie!

If you are having a choir, you could ask them to sing something before the service starts, or while you sign the register (if you have not already chosen music for this point): Jesus Christ the Apple Tree and The Truth from Above are both beautiful 20th century English settings which have escaped the frenzied hand of John Rutter

Tell us more, at the risk of saddening dear Sobernow

Thanks so much for those suggestions, lilibet I will definitely think about 'As with gladness..' as that is a lovely one.

Marina - thank you VERY much for those suggestions, a friend of mine is actually going to sing, unaccompanied, while we sign the register and she is looking for something English, I am seeing her tomorrow to discuss and will run those past her.

My bridesmaids (I have 5! - long story) are wearing chocolate brown dresses with thin diamante belts and fur wraps and wrist corsages. Apart from the tiny dds of course who are wearing lovely creamy confections from Monsoon.

Can't actually believe how sorted it all sounds...thanks so much for your interest, I am really quite touched

Enid, on my YoYo Mar Cd, Alison Krausz sings Simple Gifts and I absolutely love it, do you know it? The words are lovely.

Enid, it sounds quite amazingly wonderful. And congratulations on your baby - she's really new, isn't she?

Sobernow, I too have dp two daughters and shared mortgage and no prospect of being whisked up altar. Although feel rather weird about whole idea of getting married, I have to say. Not least because dp would do a quiet lunch break wedding and I would want massive party with magnificent frock and lots of fuss.

doormat · 04/11/2003 08:45

Enid cream and chocolate sounds lovely.
Hope everything goes well on the day

lazyeye · 04/11/2003 08:57

I had 'Dear Lord and Father of Mankind' and 'Praise my soul' and had to swallow hard not to cry all the way through - hymns are so beatuiful and emotional aren't they.

I hope you have a fantastic day Enid.

lucy123 · 04/11/2003 09:34

Oh this sounds lovely.

I hope everything goes well, Enid. My suggestion would be "Silent Night" just because its easy and everyone knows it. If you are having a choir though, then I second "In the Bleak Midwinter".

Sobernow - have you shown your dp the "Is marriage the best solution?" thread? Dp and I have just decided to get married for practical reasons and I never thought he would either!

CountessDracula · 04/11/2003 09:46

Enid it all sounds very organised! How exciting for you, I love weddings.

I got married in a reg office due to being a terrible heathen, however had I got married in a church Jerusalem would have been my top hymn, I love it! (despite being heathen do go to carol services as I love singing)

Hope you have a wonderful day.

WideWebWitch · 04/11/2003 09:49

Oh enid, it all sounds lovely! at your photoshop comment sobernow, your dp's mad (imho) you know...

I had a summer wedding which was fabulous but I do think that a winter wedding is soooooooo much more romantic. If I hadn't been so insistant on us marrying before our DD's 1st birthday (Aug 8th) then I think we'd have gone for the winter option, roaring fires, rosy cheeks, lovely
