In your opinion are all limos tacky?

I have read quite a few times on here where people have said they think limos are naff, tacky etc.

I can understand the novelty ones and bright pink ones, but what about something like these bentley limos or a rolls royce phantom or bentley flying spur

Only the stretch limos are naff. I'd be perfectly happy to be taken to Tescos in a Roller or an S Class :)

nappyaddict · 03/11/2011 17:31

What about any of these Gwendoline?

Flamesparrow · 03/11/2011 17:33

Yup. It all depends on the type tbh. The "Woohoo let's hire a limo" type are generally tacky and ugly, but there are some gorgeous ones.

(I don't even recall discussing limos before :o)

MintAero · 03/11/2011 17:34

Bentleys are ok, its the awful american ones which are shite. The stretch ones.

headfairy · 03/11/2011 17:34

I think it depends on the context (I may be contradicting myself from an earlier thread Nappyaddict :o) But I think if you're in Vegas, you're getting married in the Little Elvis Chapel and you're going for full on kitsch then I think super stretch limos with lights and jacuzzi in the back is spot on :o

If it's a girls night out celebrating a big birthday, whizzing around bars in Manchester/Newcastle/Liverpool/London then I actually think what the heck? If you've got the money and it floats your boat then go for it (may be I'm mellowing :o)

If it's a wedding at a country house hotel or grand estate, I think I'd stick to something more classic.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 03/11/2011 17:35

Beeeeeautiful Any of those but when I get rich I'm having a Continental.

headfairy · 03/11/2011 17:36

I think really shiney new Bentleys do scream footballers wives a bit too much, but then I'm all for being low key so even if I was a footballers wife I don't think I'd go for the shiney new Bentley look.

nappyaddict · 03/11/2011 17:36

Or something like this

I am with headfairy on the first bit. Not the second though - can't grasp why you would want to circle town in a car.

Flamesparrow · 03/11/2011 17:40

(why are we being recruited to talk limos btw?)

MintAero · 03/11/2011 17:41

yes, what is behind the OP??

Yes.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 03/11/2011 17:44

Wouldn't think that was naff.

It's really this and this you want to avoid.

suzikettles · 03/11/2011 17:45

I hate people looking at me which massively colours my view of tacky I suspect.

The only reason surely that you would get driven around in a massive car would be so that people would stare at you = tacky in my book.

But if you're having fun and like being the centre of attention then where is the harm?

Limo in Vegas would maybe be the exception. That would kind of fit and noone would bat an eyelid probably. Limo in Birmingham or Dundee, not so much.

headfairy · 03/11/2011 17:46

flame My thinking about driving around town in a car is more along the lines of "if it makes you happy why not?" It wouldnt' be my idea of a fun night out either. If I was a single young thing I'd much rather be somewhere I could dance and chat up hot young men :o

nappyaddict · 03/11/2011 17:46

I was thinking of surprising a friend of mine if I could get a good price on something, but not sure what to go for. I know she wouldn't like anything that could be considered tacky or naff, but I'm not very good at knowing what's best.

OP posts:
headfairy · 03/11/2011 17:49

What would you be hiring the limo to do exactly? Drive around town a bit or to take you somewhere?

I actually think it would be lovely to be collected by a vintage roller and driven to the Ritz for a champagne tea but then I am old

Flamesparrow · 03/11/2011 17:51

I guess you could pull over to chat up hot men in the street? Wink

The point is though... Is your friend like us who aren't opposed to the look but can't fathom why you would want to? If she is, then it is pointless.

suzikettles · 03/11/2011 17:53

Oh me too headfairy. A big posh car taking me to somewhere posh would feel lovely, but just riding about in a big posh car wouldn't interest me.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 03/11/2011 17:55

I'd say tacky and naff - which is fine if you want tacky and naff, because there are some occasions that just call for that!

If you wanted something classy, then a vintage car is a good idea imo. Or a VW camper - always wanted one of those Grin

Flamesparrow · 03/11/2011 17:59

Even going somewhere posh... I'd rather just get there and use the money for something else.

Letchlady · 03/11/2011 18:03

Sorry, but yes I do fear that they are. Particularly for weddings.

The only time I think they are fine really is for 16 year olds going to their school prom.

headfairy · 03/11/2011 18:06

flame I didn't even have a car for my wedding, i went to the church in a taxi, and home on the bus (though admittedly they were old routemaster buses we'd hired for the wedding :o)

fivegomadindorset · 03/11/2011 18:26

The Rolls Royce Phantom way above anything else.
