Returning things and shop barcodes........

DD got something for xmas which she'll never use so would like to take it for an exchange. However, my Mum can't remember which shop my Nan got it from - John Lewis or ELC. If I took it into ELC and tried to exchange it and it wasn't from there would they know from the barcode?

Yes they would know from the barcode. I thought ELC had their own name on all boxes/items? Or do they have an ELC in John Lewis?

MerlinsBeard · 30/12/2005 11:50

they would know by the stock. if they stock it then yes they would know by the barcode if it came from there. Can u look online to see if ELC stock it?

If there is an ELC concession in john lewis then it doesn't matter

Just check in the shop that they sell it before you take it back, if they sell it, it will be fine.

They both sell it, it's a playmobil superset although I haven't seen the actual one but the same type sets.

Had a nightmare in Toys R Us yesterday returning stuff. XP bought a load of toys for DD, all were unsuitable, either too old for her, too young or she already had them (I gave him a list of things to get, Id rather she has things that she will play with, but he was his usual idiotic self)

Lovely jumped up customer service man in Toys R Us said I couldnt exchange items as even though they sell them so do other shops. Apprantly their tills also let Argos and Tesoc bar codes through. Was very unhelpful and TBH downright rude

Asked XP for reciept, he said hes going to take over and get all the presents back.
Would rather spite DD than let me take stuff back and exchange them for things she can use.

Different thread altogether though!!

Have had a search and can't find the specific set on elc or john lewis.....I'm starting to wonder if she bought it months ago - that would mean i couldn't return it anyway wouldn't it? oh ffs!! lol

playmobil, i would have thought you would be safe taking it back to either. personally i would take it back to jl as their returns policy is better than elc.
if the only barcode on it is the one printed by playmobil on the box then surely it will be the same where ever it is stocked.

if it is exclusive to a store it would normally b indicated on the box ime.

I once bought aftershave in Holland and returned it to Debenhams

That was a few years ago though

Hmmm might be worth a try then!! The only barcode is the one on the box - it's not shop specific. Was wondering about a leap-pad book as well which I got from Littlewoods catalogue to go with dd's new leap-pad. When we opened it we realised it was for the 'plus writing' leap pad so she can't use it (my fault for not checking but it was meant to be a different one) So would I be able to take that to anywhere that sells them to change for a different one?

i think most shops kind of expect it after christmas as well, for every present that they take back that wasn't brought there i'm sure anothe store has had an item returned that was brought at the other store iyswim!

NannyL · 30/12/2005 13:16

if its made by a munufacturer (like playmobile / Tomy etc) then they WONT know where you got it from...

as long as they stock the product etc im sure youll be able to swapit for gift vouchers / good is same value etc!

The MANUFACTURER prints a unique bar code on the box, then the shops programme it into their system, not the other way round!

OnZephyrstDayofXmas · 30/12/2005 13:17

Brill. I just wondered if the shops programmed the bar codes to their own prices as they vary from shop to shop

Thanks
