taking 2 children - is this feasible?

dd1 wants to go swimming today (she is 2.5 and fairly sensible). I had a notion to take her and dd2 (6 weeks) and have dd2 by the side of the pool in her car seat watching us. DD1 does need quite a bit of supervision in the pool although we generally just splash around in a shallow beachy area. we don't usually stay long.
is this going to work or am I being a loon?

Some pools don't let you leave a child on the edge in a car seat so check before you go. Used to do this with DS2 for DS1s swimming lessons though (private pool) so there's no reason it shouldn't work. Also used to do it with DS1 for aqua aerobics! There were 6 babies lined up on the poolside in car seats Again, a private pool though.

If you do this make sure that you strip DD2 down to her vest because you don't realise how hot it is on the side of a pool. We were allowed to do this at the parent and child session at our local baths and I did it occasionally with DD but she was not impressed so ended up coming in with us from the point where she could hold her head up fairly well. However some of the Mums had their children in car seats right up until 6 months or so. A lot of them were lulled by the echoy noise I think.

Bozza · 29/12/2005 09:53

Dingdong - I thought it was one to one under 4 and then 2 to 1 under 8. Still a bit of an issue if you have 1, 3 and 5 yos, mind you. At ours they rope off the shallow end and call it a learner area and you are allowed to take two into the parent and child sessions which I did for about a year until DS started school.

Yes check with the pool before you go - they are usually pretty shirty about more than one child per adult - bummer if you have twins.

Feistybird · 29/12/2005 09:55

I think it could be fine, tho it could be bloody hard work....and have never seen a car seat in the pool area of our pool (not to say it's not permitted tho).

harpsichordcarrier · 29/12/2005 09:57

no they do let you take two children under four because I have taken two toddlers before which was hairy I can tell you.
i was really thinking about whether the baby would get the hump and whether they were likely to let me take the car seat in

the pool doesn't have a website! very annoying
will have to phone then [sigh]
