PS2 not loading games (grrr ebay) - anyone know how to sort it?

I bought a PS2 from ebay for DS for Christmas - it arrived yesterday, worked for a couple of hours, then packed up! I've emailed the seller, and hopefully it's a genuine mistake, but I'm facing the prospect of having to go out and buy a new one to avoid disappointment on the day (I'm never buying from ebay again)

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone knew a way of fixing it - perhaps it's something simple? It won't load any games - it gets stuck on a menu screen with "Browser" and "System Configuration" as the options.

Not really expecting an answer - I just thought it was worth a try ...

Thank you so much for all the advice!

I went out yesterday morning and bought ds a brand new PS2 instead, thanks to dp's generosity (I'm all spent out).

The seller doesn't care basically. She says it worked before she sent it. I asked her about the postal insurance that I had paid extra for, but no reply on that. So last night I sent her a pretty stiff email as follows:

"I have had to go out today and buy a new PS2 so that my son won't face Christmas without a present. I'm really unhappy with your response - fair enough if it had broken a couple of months down the line, but it broke the day I received it! If I were the seller of an item that broke the same day I would offer a full refund and I think this is what you should do. If you're not willing to do that I'll have to get onto ebay. It's a shame I am having to write you this email, but you haven't responded to my email of yesterday in which I asked you if the postal insurance which I paid extra for you to get would cover the cost of the PS2. I would appreciate a response from you about this - as I say, if I don't hear from you I will have to take it further."

I'll wait a few days and if she doesn't reply I'll take it further.

If all else fails I'll relist it on ebay with an honest listing - people buy faulty PS2s on there I've noticed, and at least we'd get some of our money back that way.

Bloody ebay!

yes...did you pay by paypal???

if so you can log a complaing with them...they then contact her...they argue with her...contact you...YOU don't have to discuss anything else with her.

it's sad when this happens...as it could well be that it worked fine for her...but her packing was not careful enough...so it got damaged on it's way...but your so right...this is a childs gift... she can claim against the postoffice i'm sure....

i've bought/sold on ebay for 4 years nearly...and had probably 400 transactions!!! I've only had 1 non-delivery....and 2 'damaged' items...so am not put off....its just so heartbreaking to here you are having a tough time.

so glad you are sorted for christmas....and let us know about what happens ref the item you got off ebay!

it was a postal order payment i believe

Thank you for your thoughts MrsF

As lou says, it was a postal order payment >

I don't believe it was a genuine bit of bad luck (postal damage) - it was well packed. But she described it as "in excellent condition", which it isn't, even if it was working - it was covered in dust, and one of the leads looked as if it had been bashed about. On top of that, she advertised it as coming with 5 games. Now I realise that PSone games work on PS2s, but the implication of the ad was that it would come with 5 PS2 games. It actually came with 3 PS2 games and 2 PSone games. I felt a little bit aggrieved about that as well (PSone games cost a couple of pounds each at our local game shop!). So my feeling is that she is a bit of a rip-off merchant, in this case at least!

Will let you know what happens - and to anyone reading this - have a fantastic christmas!
