AMAZON and VAT

Have just placed an Amazon order. It qualified for super saver delivery but because I want them to arrive before xmas I paid for first class delivery which is £3.95.

Just checked the order again, and noticed I have been charged over £5 VAT. Is that normal, I don't ever remember being charged vat before. I thought the prices included vat.

The prices definately include VAT, but I think they specify how much of the final cost was VAT in the final reckoning, iyswim.

Depends on the order - it may just be stating the already included vat separately (till receipts often do this too)- but if it is coming from abroad for example there may be an additional charge. We used to get stuff sent to Switzerland where any incldued vat would be deducted from our bill but potentially we wer liable for a local charge. Books are vat exempt anyway.

Don't Amazon always do this, specify the VAT seperately in the last bit?

What are the individual item prices?

Have just read something on there which says that the prices include VAT but the rate may not be correct and will be changed if it is wrong.

It's my own fault for not checking I suppose, but have never been charged extra vat before so only checked how much the p&p was.

Am so mad. Can't afford to waste a fiver.

That adds up to 30.34. So VAT was included.

but those add up to £30.34 anyway plus the £3.95 p and p of which 69p is vat. same difference ?

It was the way they listed it that confused me cos I read the £25 odd and then the total being nearly £10 more and got confused.

Well, they're trying to give a VAT bill, so that people can use the bill for business purposes. But yeah, it's confusing for everyone else.

Just be glad that VAT almost always is included here. Before I moved to the UK, I lived somewhere where, on nearly everything, 15.56% would be added to the price at the till. You could never get the right change ready! You never knew how much anything would cost! Very very annoying.

I got confused every time in Calidfornia this summer. WOuld have all my money ready at the till then bill would be about 7% more.
