does anyone know what to look out for in bottled water.... for a 10 month old? why is evian ok?

I am really upset, ds's first tooth is just about through and it looks as though it has black on it. Have tried rubbing it but the black stays
Am now convinced this is because I give him baby juice. He suffered very badly from constipation, particularly over the summer and just refused water point blank so i ended up giving weak juice just to get him to drink

i have tried and tried but he will not take boiled water, or tap water... can't blame him, it's vile. Our tap water just tastes of chlorine... yuck

anyway, he will just about tolerate bottled water but i am really confused about if they are allowed it or not. I can't find any bottled straight-forward spring water in supermarket... only mineral water

so, why is evian ok? I checked the list of minerals on several brands in sainsburys... evian had the highest levels of sodium which i would have thought was something you don't want to be giving a little-ish baby?
so what should i be looking out for? what are the "bad" minerals that he shouldn't have too much of?
all the waters i looked at had the same stuff.. just in varying amoutns

i wouldnt give mineral water to a baby

buy a water filter and do your tap water with it

otherwise cut your tap water half and half with eveian and gradually wean him off

oh that's a good idea actually enid... will the filter take all the bad taste away?

starlover, it could be that he had a knock to the mouth that caused the damage to the tooth before it came through. I agree with Enid I wouldn't give a baby mineral water and filter it instead if that's what you want

acnebride · 15/12/2005 11:11

i'm interested in what you say about evian's contents - i used it in france where it has a baby's face on the label but like you would have assumed it was therefore lowest in sodium - never checked though!
have you tried taking your ds to a dentist to have a look? i hauled ds along hte other day but naturally he changed his nap time and was asleep - try again another day!

followthestarlover, if his tooth is only just through, I doubt it would be decay or anything like that. The bacteria wouldn't be able to penitrate the gum & effect the tooth. Did he fall at any time, & hit his face where the tooth would have been under the gum line?

Active decay is brown, dead decay is black & it usually takes a while to progress to the black stage.

See is he will let you brush it, if you haven't already & see if that removes the mark. How many other teeth does he have? Which tooth is it? Do any of the other teeth appear to have marks on them?

If it worries you, take him to see the dentist.

Use sugar FREE juices, not "NO ADDED SUGAR" this usually means that they can't get anymmore in!

have just googled it and apparently, all natural mineral waters suitable for infants have to say so on the bottle... so if it doesn't say so don't use it!

the things to watch out for are calcium and sodium. a baby shouldn't have more than 350mg of sodium a day

Think it may be the calcium content as well that affects suitability for little ones? Another reason why his tooth might be discoloured is if he's had any antibiotics. Ds has got a funny coloured patch on one of his front teeth which has never come off.

MelissasSecretSanta · 15/12/2005 11:13

Should have saud, if he did fall, htis could have knocked the tooth & caused it to die, so the mark will be the dead nerve supply. It isn't anything to worry, just doesn't look that nice.

followthestarlover · 15/12/2005 11:14

MSS.. it's his very first tooth! haven't brushed it yet as i don't have a toothbrush/toothpaste for him and can't go out to get any because he ahs chicken pox!!!

we have a dentist appointment on the 28th, do you think i should see her sooner though? just in case?

very possible he couldh ave had a bump, he's always falling over! lol

info on problems with baby teeth HTH

OhlittletownofEIDSVOLD · 15/12/2005 11:19

evian from memory has the lowest salt content. By a britta filter jug - we give our two dd's filtered water and it does take the horrid taste away as our water is pretty yuk.

MelissasSecretSanta · 15/12/2005 11:20

FTSL, if you feel you can wait til then & he isn't in any pain, then wait. If you think you are just going to worry about it then go for reassurance.

I take it that you can't scrape it off with your nail?

The link gives some possible reasons for discolouration, does your DS fit into any of these?

It is hard to tell without seeing it, but I am sure it won't be decay, more a developemental occurance.

followthestarlover · 15/12/2005 11:22

none of the reasons on that link apply to him...

guess we'll just have to wait and see! other than general teething pain (and chicken pox) he seems ok in himself so i think we'll wait til the 28th.

will try and gradually wean him off the juice though, and get a brita filter asap!

thanks everyone for all the advice!

Very weak juice will have little effect if given with meals. Do don't deprive him too much.

Good Luck
