This is probably incredibly thick of me, but I want to transfer the balance on my credit card to my new one that is offering me 6 mts interest free on b transfers. If I do this will it mean I can still use my other credit card or does it mean the other one gets cancelled?

You can still use your other card unless you advise the provider that you wish to close the account.

You can use your other card but if you know what is good for you, you will cut it up and cancel the account

WideWebWitch · 22/10/2003 09:58

Yes, you can still use the other one as it will be clear (the balance will have been transferred). But this usually defeats the object since you would normally be transferring a balance to another card in order to pay 0% interest on it. If you carry on using the old card you will be paying the usual interest rate (which presumably won't be 0% or you wouldn't have transferred in the first place!) The old card will only be cancelled if you cancel it sually.

Thanks!! I'm only keeping the other card for emergencies (honest!!)

Can I nick your thread a moment, Magnum and ask if it's complicated to swap credit card accounts? I suggested we did this to dh but he claims it involvess too much faffing about. I think it'll be worth if, if it puts money in our pockets and not in theirs!

Tinker · 22/10/2003 12:52

Not too complicated, it is a tiny faff. Whether you apply on line or not, still think you need to eventually sign a form. What you need to organise are you current cards and the balances you want to transfer. Definitely worth it though if you have a large balance each month

suedonim · 22/10/2003 13:31

Thanks, Tinker. It's only one card and we don't have too much on it but even so it might be worth it.

It's really easy to do.
