Has anyone cleaned a wool carpet themselves?

Hi, dh has borrowed a carpet cleaner, and intended to use vanish or something to clean my lounge carpet. It has wool in it, and was also scotchguarded too. Should we do it ourselves, or get someone in to do it? Wondered if it might shrink/ what happens to scotchguard?

I hired a Rug Doctor from Johnson's dry cleaners. It was very, very noisy but bloody good. Our caroets aren't scotchguarded though
