a question about late abortions...

am genuinely curious, and don't want this to turn into a big controversial thread!!!

I have been thinking about some of the links posted on the thread I started about the lady who survived being aborted... and the partial birth abortion technique which just sounds hideous.

I don't think I could bear to ever do that..even if I was dying, although obviously I have never been in that situation...

but I just wondered how they perform late abortions over here, please tell me it isn't like that?
and also, what reasons do they do them for? I think they do it if the mother has cancer that needs treating? is that right? what else?

also, how late can a late abortion be up to? I mean, say you only had 4 weeks to go.. would they induce you? what is the cut off?

I am just being really nosy here, and hope this doesn't upset/offend anyone

I think 24 weeks is the latest, whatever. From what I am aware they have to aneathetise you and basically make the baby into small enough pieces to bring it out of you. Makes me feel ill. Not something anyone would ever go through lightly though I am sure. I do believe even so, that the legal limit really should be reduced. It is horrid to think about.

followthestarlover · 10/12/2005 22:50

but i thought that for medical reasons you could have one later?

They also do it for people who have had their 20 week scan (which may not happen until 22 weeks) and an abnormality shows up which leads the parents to want an abortion.

morningpaper · 10/12/2005 22:50

I believe that if the baby is physically handicapped then it can be aborted right up until birth. There was a certain MNer who was offered a termination at 30 weeks a few months ago.

I think it is for medical reasons it can go up untill 24 weeks. Abortion at that late stage is very far from routine ASAIK.

Ah, MP you might be right there. I am thinking in terms of mothers medical conditions. Whole different ball game when done for the baby, whole different set of moral issues.

NutcrackingXmas · 10/12/2005 22:52

God really wish I hadn't read your post Floss. I have had a termination and feel even more awful now.

Forgot what I was going to say now.......

followthestarlover · 10/12/2005 22:52

gosh i thought you could only have one really late if it was a ltierally life or death thing... like the mum would die if they didn't do it

Someone I know (a few years ago now} asked for an obortion at 24 weeks even though her baby was healthy, this was because she had found out her husband had been sexually abusing her elder daughter. The abortion was agreed to, but thankfully she changed her mind the day before the appointment.

jinglinggoblin · 10/12/2005 22:55

o shit, dont read mine....ive had a drink and i get upset about this stuff. am going to email mumsnet. sorry

snowfalls · 10/12/2005 22:57

Too late,

HunkerXmasAndAMunkerNewYear · 10/12/2005 23:00

JG, I learnt that at school too and mine wasn't a Catholic school.

I'm pro-choice, but wish that women could always choose not to do it iyswim (note could, not would - I'm not condemning anyone for having done this, not by a long way). And 24 weeks is just too for words.

jinglinggoblin · 10/12/2005 23:00

im sorry if you want i will start a thread about why not to send your child to catholic school. i was only about 14 when they showed us this, i have been very deeply affected by it and i have no idea how it is legal to show videos like that to school children. tbh i have never actually said to anyone how much abortion upsets me, i just say i dont agree with it usually and dont say why.

am very, very, sorry, just didnt think. have emailed them

Oops, that's heartbreaking

OnTheFlossDayOfChristmas · 10/12/2005 23:05

Have seen that video too. When I was pregnant last year and DP wanted me to have abortion. NC, am so sorry. Had no intention of hurting anyone. As I said not a decision that would ever be taken lightly. I hope you don't mind me asking, was yours a late abortion? If not it is not done in anything like the same way.

In 1998, of the 88 abortions carried out after 24 weeks, six were at 35 weeks or later. The latest was carried out at 38 weeks.

how sad is that? 38 weeks?

Awful. My healthy born DS was born naturally before that.

HunkerXmasAndAMunkerNewYear · 10/12/2005 23:13

Am 35 weeks pg today - just...well, no way, really
