Wouldn't you need a special boot shoe horn ie a shoe horn with a long handle?

Shoe horn may help, but it would have to be a really long one (sell them in Debenhams). I lol at putting boots on as I have recently bought some myself, and I had so much trouble getting them off my feet!!
The 'horn' bit of the shoe horn sits behind your heel and helps the shoe go over your heel (basically instead of using/squashing your fingers). Have a look on ebay or do a search to look at some on the net. (cant do a link, otherwise I would look for you!)

thanks, they only just won't go round the heal bit and i'm hoping its just because the leather is a bit stiff due to them being new

They will probably be ok after youve worn them couple of times. Wear them indoors to break them in!
