I have just signed up for the Playtex Moonwalk 2006. Anyone else fancy joining me?

Posey - Thanks for that number - I have got a place they had just lost it somehow - the credit card debit is proof of the place. Unicorn I'm also panicing on training - I gave up as was sure I had no place. How many weeks is it now ?

JoPG · 31/03/2006 13:11

It must be about 7 or 8 weeks away.
I am doing London Marathon in April so am kinda assuming that that will see me through, although a few people have said to me that I should be doing specific walking training. Not got too much time at the mo though, so walking will have to wait.

So far I think the following have places:
JoPG
LizP
Unicorn
Posey

Any others??

Shall we try and meet up one Sunday maybe and have a training day together (round Hyde Park?)

I imagine JoPG will be much fitter and quicker than me tho, infact, everyone will be!! Blush

Cadbury · 31/03/2006 14:13

hey Unicorn - I've seen you on the dance floor - I don't think you'll have any problems finding the energy WinkGrin

unicorn · 31/03/2006 19:44

hmmm, dancing like a mad thing (after a high alcohol intake) is somewhat different from walking through the night (with absolutely no alcohol)with ginormous norks bouncing merrily away (in the opposite direction Wink)

26 miles will take me - quite some time I think!

CHICagoMUM · 31/03/2006 19:52

I've heard nothing and my check hasn't be cashed so I guess I'm not in, (prob not a bad thing as I starting training a while back but kind of fizzled out)

JoPG · 01/04/2006 16:35

The longer it takes then the more time you have to enjoy the experience!
Also, it will be a shorter wait at the end until the trains are running on the Sunday morning!
It's always best to look on the bright side Grin
Have you managed to get out atall this weekend, unicorn? The weather is lovely here and it is great for being outside.

Hi all,

I did my usual Saturday 'power walk' this morning (about 4 miles or so)hoping someone else from the group was planning to do the Moon walk - but nope - not even the organiser is doing it this year.

I won't have anyone to walk with on the night Sad maybe I could meet up with you lot at the start of the walk, and then you can whizz on, and leave me in a trail of dust!?

Posey · 01/04/2006 20:23

Hi unicorn, jo,liz, where are you all? I'm in London and tend to train in Regents Park.
I guess we will all want to walk at our own paces especially if we haven't trained together, but how about meeting up in Playtex City (yes thats what they call it!) Last year we had to be there by 8pm and I've got to say it was a bit tedious waiting on your own (most people seemed to be in groups or at least pairs).
Looking forward to comparing training notes (haha, not many of those I'm afraid so far)

LizP · 02/04/2006 16:00

I did 10.5 miles this morning in about 3 hours - so not exactly a powerwalk but at least I think I should be able to manage to build up to the distance. Had a nap in the bath this afternoon!
I'm in Heretfordshire and I just picked one of dh running routes and ploded round twice. Reckon since the Moonwalk is flat it should be easier than my training. Also have to work on getting ds3 to stop feeding at night - but he's 18 months so doesn't really need too!

unicorn · 03/04/2006 20:04

Yes to meeting up before the walk (how will we know each other?!)

What stuff do you take with you on the night (water obv, but music? raingear?? )

FYI - there is a group meeting at Hyde Park every Sunday 9.30am training for this walk, so I think I shall try it this weekend.

LizP · 07/04/2006 18:16

Unicorn - i did ther half moon 3 years ago and seem to remember there were more water stations than I thought so might not be worth carrying your own ? Also they gave out those plastic cape things so unless it is awful weather I might just stick with that in case of light rain. I would say you don't want anything you can't fit in a bum bag. Camera, money, phone, sweets are my essentials I think.

Posey · 08/04/2006 17:32

Sorry, have been away for a week so just getting back in touch. Stayed at parents and managed to get out there along part of the national cycle network. Did 12 miles in 2hours 40 so pleased with that (great improvement on last years times)

Anyway on the night, you can take a rucksack and store that before you go off on the walk. They provide loads of water stations and snacks (fruit, rice cakes etc provided at various points). Also give out rain capes should you need them. You get a metallic blanket thing before you start which you hang over your bum bag as a great reflector. Was so hot last year we never needed them to keep warm.
In my bum bag I carried money, ID, paracetamol, plasters, phone, glucose sweets, muesli bar, raisins, disposable camera, paper and pen, tissues. Think that was it! Oh and take some safety pins to attach your walker number.
Getting quite excited now Grin

JoPG · 08/04/2006 17:38

Posey - how big is that bumbag??

My trouble is that once I decide to take something then I can never travel light. Will prob end up taking the kitchen sink et al!

Have not focused too much on the event so far as am trying to get London Marathon out of the way first. Will then try a couple of walks.
I am a complete sleep bunny so staying up all night is going to be a challenge in itself for me. Must get lots of sleep in the week before.

OP posts:
Posey · 08/04/2006 18:39

Not huge. I use it every time I'm out walking.
Its probably about 20cm by 10cm and about 5cm deep.
Good luck with the marathon. How on earth are you going to stop yourself breaking into a run on the moonwalk?!

Posey · 13/04/2006 19:07

So any training happening?!
i did a half marathon today, well slightly more, 13.25miles in 3 hours which I was dead pleased with.
How long does anyone reckon its going to take to complete? Last year I did it in 6h 55m, and am hoping it'll be nearer 6.5 this year.

notasheep · 20/04/2006 20:12

So who is definately doing it? I am a VOLUNTEER this year, not sure what my job will be yet

notasheep · 21/04/2006 09:43

anyone?

JoPG · 21/04/2006 12:33

So far I know about the following mnetters who are doing it:

Posey
LizP
Unicorn
JoPG

I am being pretty quiet at the mo cos have got FLM coming up on Sunday. Will put my walking shoes some time after that!
Notasheep - do you know what your role is yet for the night?? I've heard the toilet situation can be a nightmare so if you could be toilet monitor for the night and let any mnetters jump to the front of the queue then that would be great Grin
BTW - Why are you not doing it yourself this year??

OP posts:
Posey · 21/04/2006 19:52

Sent an email to moonwalk hq asking where our final packs are, as we had them about 6 weeks before the event last year. They've put up a notice saying they'll start going out end of next week and for 2 weeks after that. Doesn't give much time for people to get decorating or to contact them re lost or incomplete parcels (there's a lot of stuff contained in those packages!)
Must say I'm finding there whole organisational stuff a bit lacking this year. Just hope the actual night is well done.
Am not normally this negative btw, but feel things haven't been organised as early as they should, and my training is certainly not as good as it should be.

Good luck for Sunday Jo! Will be going to watch.

vicky99 · 21/04/2006 19:57

i walked the walk last year. NEVER again. it was great and very well run. But very hard work. The hardest thing was losing a night sleep. Good Luck everyone.

notasheep · 21/04/2006 20:30

JoPG- i did the full marathon walk in 2001 with dp,a fantastic experience and the event was alot smaller then.
Rather than be greedy-i thought someboby else should get to walk it hence Volunteering instead.

Still dont know what my role is on the night, but will post on here as soon as i find out.
I could be bribed with bars of chocolate!
Think i may have to wear a name badge or something..

JoPG · 04/05/2006 13:11

Hooray, my bra came today!
Also a tshirt and a cap.
Must try and think of some inspiration to decorate it.

OP posts:
notasheep · 04/05/2006 19:52

Dont think they are very organised at all do you?
I still havent had anything in post

JoPG · 04/05/2006 21:57

Not very organised atall.

My pack included a training guide - not very useful at this late stage! And it didn't include the final details booklet which is going to be sent separately next week!

Hope everyone else gets theirs soon.
