Tchibo - anyone know if it's going bust ?

Just wondered if anyone had heard anything - I've been waiting for 3 orders to come through and eventually phoned them today and they were absolutely crap and rude on the phone ! Said they'd sent me letters explaining that their credit card payments system isn't working and I have to send a cheque before they will send goods - but no letters have arrived and they haven't replied to e-mails I've sent etc.

DH convinced that no reputable company would lose it's credit card facility for 2 whole weeks without them being in dire straits.

I am so cross - the girl I spoke to was really rude - and they did after all have all my contact details including e-mail and mobile number - surely it would have been possible for them to contact me !

Trouble is that all our ski stuff is in the order and it is SO much cheaper than everywhere else !

DH doesn't want me to send the cheque - what do you reckon ?

Looks to be trading normally in the stores and it operates throughout Europe. Is there a branch near you where you could collect the stuff instead ?

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 30/11/2005 19:54

Sounds really odd I must say. I think I'd be wary of sending a cheque.

I'd suggest going to a branch if you can.

santabops · 30/11/2005 20:04

Our branch had a Sale on today - and I've never noticed them having sales normally.

Janh · 30/11/2005 20:04

I placed an internet order on 13/11, it was despatched on 15/11 and arrived c 21/11 (can't remember exactly) - don't know if this helps, it merely shows that their credit card system was working on 13/11!

She shouldn't have been rude though. I would complain about that.

hope not, we sent them a cheque last week for ds' xmas present....do you think i shouldn't have?

fishie · 30/11/2005 21:31

my order arrived today, no problems paying either. although it was a reorder, the original wasn't delivered and they were appalling on the phone. but i love tchibo stuff would be utterly heartbroken if they go bust.

SnowsyPosey · 30/11/2005 21:36

I notice sales in our Tchibo quite frequently. I haven't ever used their online service as we have a very good shop nearby but MIL has a few times and has never had a problem (although delivery is quite slow)
I hope they don't go bust. We save a fortune on cycling and running stuff by buying it there.

Would be very surprised if they were going bust. Although they're new to Britain they've been around in Germany for at least 50 years.

Scatterbrain · 30/11/2005 21:56

Thanls everyone - I'm going to post the cheque tomorrow !!

Would get it from local shop but they were out on quite a few of the ladies ski items and didn't have any XLs in the mens range !

Wish me luck - or Bye Bye to 35 squid !!

oh hello, how nice he is a little walrus since starting solids, now more than 7 kilos. sleeping no better - am comforting myself that soon he won't NEED to eat 3-4 times a night and will just have to deal with it then. how about you? how is she settling in the cot?

ooh well done that is fab progress. i've taken the side of the cot and lashed it to the bed and he actually fell asleep in it last night. woke up an hour later of course

LIZS · 01/12/2005 14:55

Our branch was trading normally today, no sale, lots of stock.

I've ordered stuff online recently from Tchibo with no problems. Even if you send a cheque you can cancel it up to 6 wks later as I recently found out to my cost. I sold a laptop on ebay and waited for the money to show in my account before I sent it off. I emailed the buyer to say it had been despatched (I'm polite like that)and two hours later the funds had been taken back out of my account . I always thought that once a cheque had cleared then that was that but apparently not.

I've still got his address though if any mumsnetters on the Isle of Wight fancy paying him a little visit.......

foundintranslation · 01/12/2005 17:26

The German business news has nothing about this, just that Tchibo is no longer going to expand into the US - apparently they want o concentrate on the European market, especially UK.
