Horoscopes/tarot readings

Does anyone take these seriously? I've never had a tarot reading or anything like that but find myself horribly attracted to daily horoscope nonsense at the moment (never even looked at them before and realise that it's bonkers as applies to millions and millions of people etc). I do realise it's a load of nonsense for SO many reasons and am worried I'm sounding like a loony. HONESTLY, I'M NOT. However, apparently today I'm going to meet a rich, attractive, NICE, successful man who will fall madly in love with me. My worry is this has to happen in the next two hours between my office and local station, getting anxious as to where he is ....

I take Horoscopes very seriously I check mine everyday on Johnathan Cainers website. He is inspiring and it really helps me. Good times are on the way for me he thinks! (oh and that man is on his way to mine i think)

doormat · 09/10/2003 16:47

I dont take horoscopes seriously but the tarot cards are a different matter. Some people have the gift others are charlatans be wary.

sykes · 09/10/2003 16:49

I must say I quite like Jonathan Cainers thoughts as well, more philosophical than you'll meet blah, blah, blah. However, today is my lucky day and I shall just have to run up and down the 17:58 from London Bridge in search of Mr Marvellous. God help him if he's on his way to Stockport. Typical man, can't commit.

I never take horoscopes seriously. Stopped reading them when I was about 13. How can they be right for such a cross section of people?

forestfly · 09/10/2003 16:51

Dont go home till midnight, you have to find him he sounds stunning. Look everywhere!!!!!!!!!!!!

sykes · 09/10/2003 16:55

I do know that - I did say I realise they're meant for the whole universe, and haven't read them for a while but curious. I've also no intention of having a tarot card reading - just wondered about peoples' experiences.

FF, looking under my desk at the moment, off to the ladies to see if he's hiding there. The naughty boy.

Don't really pay much attention to horoscopes but MIL does my Tarot Cards for me on a regular basis!

Good luck finding Mr Marvelous!!

forestfly · 09/10/2003 17:04

Found him yet?

sykes · 09/10/2003 17:10

No, he really is being very naughty, playing hard to get, I think. Maybe he's waiting outside my office with a bunch of cream roses and a bottle of champage. Silly me, that MUST be where he is. Such a cheeky chap.

OP posts:
forestfly · 09/10/2003 17:15

Imagine Cream Roses and champagne........... God i feel depressed!

sykes · 09/10/2003 17:16

Me too. It was something my h did a lot and I REALLY miss it. Ah, well, I'd settle for a pint and a pansy at the moment. Off home now. Enjoy your evening.

forestfly · 10/10/2003 10:59

So, whats he like? I take it you've had no sleep

sykes · 10/10/2003 11:02

WEll, he's being very elusive .... You're right about no sleep, though, elder dd up for about three hours (and it's her party today ...) followed by younger dd. Then joint wakeup call at 6 am. I love being a single mother ...
I'll update you re Mr elusive as soon as he's brave enough to come out of hiding.

OP posts:
forestfly · 10/10/2003 11:05

Not the answer i wanted, i see your getting in trouble for being bitter! Naughty you! Hope dd has a lovely party and you are headache free. If i meet anyone single, handsome, loaded, great with children ........., i'll send him your way

sykes · 10/10/2003 11:09

Thanks, feel suitably reprimanded. Make sure he DOES come my way ...

Watch Psychic Secrets Revealed next Friday at 8.30pm. It uncovers how tarot card readers operate. Very fascinating programme that serves to increase my skepticism!

Snugs · 11/10/2003 19:04

Psychic Secrets reveals how the FAKES work - but that doesn't apply to all Tarot readers!

Horoscopes - Keep in mind that to accurately cast a chart you need to use place, date and time of birth for each individual. It is impossibe to be even vaguely correct for everyone under a single sign when the horoscope is only a few lines long. Treat them purely as fun, or have a personal chart written for you by an expert.

I am going to a spiritualist church tomorrow with my friend. I have been once before but thought it was tripe, but I will give it another go as my friend wants company.

linzoid · 21/10/2003 16:25

Doormat, how did you get on at the spriitualist church? used to go to one myself but not been for a long while and not sure still what to make of it.

doormat · 21/10/2003 17:23

Never went linzoid, mate was busy. We have organised it for the next few weeks

Rhubarb · 21/10/2003 20:42

I think you need a sceptic on this thread! Yes the Psychic Secrets Revealed do tell how the frauds operate, but how do you know if someone is pulling the wool over your eyes or not? The participants he has on the show are pretty much convinced of his 'psychic powers' until he reveals how he did it.
I went to a spiritualist church a while ago to research my dissertation topic and also out of curiosity. I have never been back and never intend going back either. I have a fairly open mind on most topics and am happy to be proved wrong with the right type of evidence, but these people that I met were freaky and rude. I almost felt compelled to agree with them even when they were wrong because of the intense pressure of the surroundings.

Please do go with caution Doormat and question everything. It's the only way to find out the truth these days.

It is (unfortunately) very difficult to spot the genuine article amongst the fakes.

IMO, for 1 to 1 readings the more they charge the more likely they are to be a fake. Genuine mediums and Tarot readers don't tend to exploit their gifts and will charge little (usually expenses) if anything at all.

For platform mediums (meetings with a mass audience and no guarantee of a message) it can be more difficult to spot them and there is always the chance of a 'plant' in the audience.

In both cases, the best thing is to find someone by recommendation. Be VERY sparing in what you tell them (yes/no answers should always be enough) and try to suppress your body language (difficult I know).
