Don't overdo it if you can possibly limit friends and relatives as the birthday child gets so easily overwhelmed! We had far too many kids round at our dd's 1st birthday tea and she got very overwhelmed and I couldn't even comfort her as I was too busy making cups of tea and handing out cakes! My ds' 1st was probably a lot better - just us and him and a camera - we had a fab day at the park, took loads of great photos and he had a little cake with one candle all to himself. It's such a special date - probably the most memorable birthday for you as it's such a milestone, so I would certainly recommend limiting activities and just concentrating on your one-year old if you can. If you really need to do a party just do maybe a few sandwiches and cake at tea time with a few baby friends and give them a couple of balloons to play with! Good luck!

Have to agree with thritysomething that the party might get overwhelming for your DD. We had a party of just family and one little friend. But DD ended up going to sleep in the middle of it as she was so overcome with all the attention, present unwrapping, etc.

For the food I would keep it really simple (fingers foods) and just have a selection of toys about as they won't be playing together at that age anyway.

We had 12 little friends plus their parents and our families and it was great. Dd was not at all overwhelmed but loved ripping over pressies and dancing to the music.

We had a little birthday tea on her actual bday, just me, her and dh which was v sweet.
