I have enrolled ds into a class, he starts next week. A friend asked if it was self defence or not, as some martial arts are'nt.

I have no idea, anyone know

erm, can't help you, I'm afraid, but why did you enrol him in a class if you know nothing about it?

if it's like the ju jitsu I used to do, it was more about the judo - ie using the other persons weight and momentum against them. think a lot of it is down to how they teach as well - ie our sensi was a to disarm not harm, iycwim. I trained with the adults as was bigger than the other kids but, the kids classes I watched were all for disarming. we did have a spa session which was basically to get opponant on the floor no contact to the face and no out right punches etc - it was attack/block etc.

if any one was hurt in the classes (rare) the sensi would stop everyhting we'd all go tot he side and he'd attend to the person - we would be allowed to watch as well, and learnt that side.
