Chatham and surrounding area - anyone know it?

Hi

I am considering going to university and my first choice is the university of Kent. If I get in I would be based at the Chatham campus and was wondering if anyone can advise me what it is like there and also in the surrounding areas? I will need relatively inexpensive accommodation, good schools and somewhere that has a nice child friendly feel to it. Good shops would be nice too!

Bits of Chatham are really horrible, but bits are nice. How are you for transport? (Because places like Walderslade, Borstal etc. are supposed to be quite nice).

Don't drive. God - is it really awful then and in what way?

How about Gillingham?

Where is the Chatham campus? Is it the one at Horsted on the Maidstone Road? If so, you're not far from Walderslade there which is fairly OK. Main part of Chatham is pretty dire and Gillingham even worse.
