ours is new. apparently it gives off fumes when you use it for the first couple of times - are they dangerous? does anyone know?

I did have one put in a house before and don't recall a problem, I think it's just grease and paint burning in..open the windows, and keep the small children out of the way

Enid · 14/11/2005 13:58

i think it is silicon from the paint?

Enid · 14/11/2005 13:58

am a bit paranoid as pg

cupcakes · 14/11/2005 13:59

can you phone the retailer/manufacturer?

throckenholt · 14/11/2005 13:59

no - just the paint and dust burning off - will happen any time it gets hotter than it has for a while - just do it on a day when you can open the windows and let the smell out and fresh air in.

GREATauntymandy · 14/11/2005 13:59

my mum has 2 dont remember this at all but i doubt it would be toxic!

Enid · 14/11/2005 14:00

I did ask the retailer

they said oh its nothing to worry about just go out for a couple of hours

hmmm dont really want to go out and leave the stove unattended for the first time

I don't think the fumes are dangerous - but ours is now about 8 years old and still stinks when it is first lit! We consequently don't use it much - and I didn't use it at all when I was pg or kids very small as I was scared of the fumes.

DaddyCool · 14/11/2005 14:01

i've got one. just dust and grime from factory. open window.

i just had a fire the other night and the front room stunk a bit. it was just dust and crap that built up over the summer.

it's a lovely thing to have isn't it. i love my multifuel burner.

zippitippitoes · 14/11/2005 14:02

I've an idea there was something about how hot it should get the first couple of times sort of running in gradually

lucykate · 14/11/2005 14:02

we've got one, yes they give off fumes for a bit. just open a window. the smell does go fairly quickly. its not dangerous, just a bit unpleasent. its the paint and the stuff they seal it with when its made.

throckenholt · 14/11/2005 14:03
  • if it isn't to cold where you are - light it now - open all the windows in that room, and then go into another room - it will only last an hour or two.
littlemissbossy · 14/11/2005 14:03

we've got two - don't remember any fumes tbh Confused

Enid · 14/11/2005 14:09

i am being pathetic

we've had it for nearly a month

i must get on with it

OP posts:
throckenholt · 14/11/2005 14:14

yep - get one with it .

They are great when you get used to them - keep the house really warm - much better than an open fire.

throckenholt · 14/11/2005 14:15

oops - get on with it - must learn to type properly...

Enid · 14/11/2005 14:15

we have open fire too but agree it is just cosmetic unless you sit really close and burn face while bum freezes

Glad to hear they're good heaters! We're planning on getting 2 (when the builder finally makes it here). Dh is really keen to get us onto a different energy (heating) source as he is worrying that gas supplies are going to run out/ get extortionate soon. I'd originally hoped they would have been in for this winter but I have lost all hope that we'll ever see them.
Am v jealous of your smelly ones!
We used one once on holiday which was pretty useless and gave off minimal heat - I am assuming it was just set up wrong or needed cleaning. Reassuring to hear that they should actually be hotter than that!

zippitippitoes · 14/11/2005 14:34

coupckes they are more likel;y to be too hot then not hot enough

katymac · 14/11/2005 14:42

They are fantastic - we have one which heats our hot water and a radiator - we are changing it for a more powerful one which will run about 8 radiators and our hot water.......anyone want a second hand woodburner?

I love it - but it often heats the house too much

Enid · 14/11/2005 15:47

ours is fabbo

\link{http://www.clearviewstoves.com/pioneer400.htm\this one

small but beautifully formed

it was demo'd in the shop and gets very hot but is very controllable

at least one room will be warm - our oil supply has gone up from £235 a tank to £450

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 14/11/2005 15:48

have you lit it yet?

Enid · 14/11/2005 18:04

no

think will wait till the weekend and we can have all windows open

OP posts:
katymac · 14/11/2005 18:22

It's an absolutely fabulous stove - really good make and will last a life time (my dad has one and it at least 15 yo and looks newer than mine (4ys))

It is very hot (and very controlable)

Really good woodburner

Enid · 14/11/2005 18:23

I will tell dh as I chose it
