ours is new. apparently it gives off fumes when you use it for the first couple of times - are they dangerous? does anyone know?

I've just tried lighting some paper and the smoke went straight up s fingers crossed it is ok. It's a rented house so I can't get work done.

Good luck

I am sitting here freezing, desperately jealous of those of you with yours up and running!

Has anyone got some nice 'companion sets'(you do learn some lovely new terms when you enter the land of the real fire) or trivets or whatever for theirs?

DH is the proud maintainer of ours and I am sure that he need more accoutrments.

On the subject of logs, we got a bootload of seasoned for about £12 from a not-so-local nursery. (DH is wliing to travel near and far to sustain our lovely fire......). Dobbies garden centres do small bags for about £3.50.

I don't know whether it's the same in England but in Scotland you can buy a licence from the Forestry people for about 12 quid, which entitles you to pick up fallen wood from any of their land. I know people who fuel their fires this way - v cheap!

We pick our sticks up from garden, & cut logs down each year (or neighbours give us theirs when they are pruning).

Only drawback is the whole house smells smoky the next morning when fire has been on - & we have a whirl thing on chimney to draw the smoke up (which was well worth the money btw).

here's mine!

It belts out heat and we haven't had to buy any wood yet!

We had to have a roof replaced a couple of years ago and dh asked the builders to save all the joists. We have been burning them since the stove was put in last year (not in the Summer, obviously)and have reduced our oil bill by 25% at least. When wood runs out, will probably get some coal in!

I go on long dog walks and spot felled trees and the like. after asking whoever it is that has cut it down I then go back in my van/car thing and pick it up.

In doing this, rarely have to pay for any wood... just coal which costs about £8 per week

Its now been burning constantly for about a week (pre preg brain can't remember) and its never bee so warm in these here parts in the mornings!! Mmmmm.

Does sound like you have a problem with draw Milliways. Our house never smells smokey.
