ours is new. apparently it gives off fumes when you use it for the first couple of times - are they dangerous? does anyone know?

What size are yours? (if you don't mind me asking!)

Enid · 15/11/2005 17:28

Physical size or output?

cupcakes · 15/11/2005 17:30

ah yes. I have been looking at your link - that is the size we're thinking of. There are some for sale at a shop near us for about half that price but I'm weondering if this would be a false economy. (maybe they don't have the kettle thingy).
My problem is we want 2.

cupcakes · 15/11/2005 17:31

katymac - physical size. Our rooms are fairly small so I don't think we need a huge output. Please correct if wrong!

Enid · 15/11/2005 17:31

ours was really expensive but we had saved money on other parts of the build so went for it.

I dont know, I mean I know people that say villagers are crap but then I know people who have had them for years and they are fine.

OP posts:
cupcakes · 15/11/2005 17:32

yes - the ones we had been looking at are villagers. They don't look as nice as yours.

katymac · 15/11/2005 17:33

Cheap ones from the far east are not (generally) as high quality

UK ones are (generally) very good quality and ones from Germany./Belgium and Scandanavia are excellent

here's mine

Enid · 15/11/2005 17:33

i havent even lit mine yet though

am waiting till the weekend so can have all doors and windows open to air the place

I love those ones katymac, esp the little tiny very ornate ones

also the jotul ones are good but sometimes a bit overdesigned

my neighbour has a fab bright yellow 60's one it is the worlds grooviest woodburner

Mine heats a room 17x11 and warms the house plus heating the bathroom (on a radiator - for free) and heating our hot water tank (still warm the next morning (enough for 2 baths)even if the fire goes out overnight

cupcakes · 15/11/2005 17:36

very nice, Katymac.

I hadn't even considered country of origin. Really don't want some shoddy thing imported from thousands of miles away!!

lummox · 15/11/2005 17:37

We got Nestor Martin stove about a month or so ago.

For the first two lightings there was a pretty horrid smell - like burning glue.

Didn't have ds (5 months) in the room for 2 days and wouldn't have gone in there if I'd been pregnant. Don't suppose it was dangerous but it smelt a bit chemically.

Certainly think you should do it at a time that you can open windows.

Stove now running properly and is most best.

katymac · 15/11/2005 17:37

this is my new one - but without the canopy - I think a canopy is naff

katymac · 15/11/2005 17:38

Also you have the environmental impact of importing it - local is better (cast iron is better than steel too)

Enid · 15/11/2005 17:40

they are such good stoves arent they katymac

what colour did you get?

I quite liked that brown colour

OP posts:
Enid · 15/11/2005 17:41

Oooh, stoves - I love them! We've been planning to install one for years but haven't got around to it yet. We have an open fire that heats the surrounding countryside very nicely so I reckon a stove would be much more efficient in terms of heating the house and fuel usage. We'll probably get one when we move back here permanently. Do you manage to keep them in all night or do you need to start afresh each day?

Serah · 15/11/2005 17:56

I have just remembered where we got ours from....

dowling stoves

Ours is the hybrid in black - love the sumo!

Serah · 15/11/2005 17:57

We don't tend to keep ours in overnight, but sometimes it just does all by itself
