What is it like for families with kids? Friend is thinking of buying there but scared of leaving London.

The only reason I suggested not Winchester on this thread was the cost of the housing - which appeared to be an issue to Lewislewis' friend (and the slight snob element ).

Oh yes the cost of housing is stupid, I agree. And the snob element is there too, and the shops are pretty useless (so many excellent shops from the 70s are now estate agents) and if you didn't grow up with the squaddies and the cathedral and the college boys, you might find them hard to stomach (though the squaddies aren't there any more) but the schools are reasonable and the water meadows are a superlative place to tkae children (my second back garden as as child) and, it may not help all the Lefties out there, but they don't even have a Tory MP these days!) Right, nostalgia trip over, I am off to do some work.
