Should we change her name....

No, not her much debated first name!
When we were deciding what to call dd ds really, really wanted her to be called Edie. In the end we went for a totally different firstname, with Frances as her middle name (it's my middle name and my grandmother's name). But we told ds that she could have Edie as a middle name as he was so upset, but never officially called her Baby Edie Frances Surname. But dd is now nine months old and Ds still tells everyone that she has four names - Baby EDIE Frances Surname. And he is very proud of it. I feel racked with guilt that we didn't give her the name and think it is so sweet that ds really wanted to help name her (he loves her very much).
Dh thinks I am insane. But then he thought that ds would forget all about the name business in a matter of weeks!).
What do you think? Am I mad and should just leave it, or get the form and add another middle name?

I would do it aloha, but don't listen to me I still can't decide on DD2's name (she will be here in 9 weeks)!

Zephyrcat · 12/11/2005 11:44

I think it's lovely and you should definately do it

Ignore the miserys!!

beansprout · 12/11/2005 11:47

I say change it. This has nothing to do with pandering. You are honouring something you have already told ds and which now clearly means a lot to him.

tamum · 12/11/2005 11:52

I agree- you should add the name. I think it would have been fine to tell him at the time that you were choosing the names and she wasn't going to have his name but having got this far I would change it. As others have said, it's a lovely name so why not? My cousin wanted to call her baby sister Fido- that would have been taking it a bit far.

Angela2005 · 12/11/2005 12:03

Well done, aloha. If you say you'll do something, you must honour it. Equally with kids as anyone else.

cod, "kids are lied to all their lives" - that doesn't make it right! I absolutely refuse to lie to kids (mine or anyone else's even if I'm asked to), although I confess I've slipped a couple of times. How are they supposed to trust you or learn to keep their word and tell the truth themselves. And anyway, it's just wrong.
Don't mean to sound harsh, I know it's hard, but it's better in the long run, surely.

weesaidie · 12/11/2005 12:22

Yes I think you should add it. It isn't pandering, you have told him that it was there as a name, and I think (if you are happy about it) then it should be.

If he had just turned round and started demanding it I would say no but as he believes it is already there I would say yes.

Plus it sounds lovely.

(PS IMO Santa is more of a fantasy/fairytale... not a lie)

Tobim · 12/11/2005 22:28

It's totally your call - add it!
My older d was 4 when I was pregnant with our second child. Before we knew whether the baby would be a boy or a girl, she decided what names she'd like for it: Catflower for a girl and Cynthia Ribena for a boy. She even 'wrote' letters to the baby telling it about the names but we had to tell her that we had other names in mind. Both children are known by (several)nicknames anyway.

noops · 12/11/2005 22:39

do it aloha,
i am struggling with ds2's name.
we had a mad 1/2 hr and called ds1 by a sensible but nice first name and an alliterative funny second name. it goes so well together that alot of the time he is called by both names and if anyone asks him his name he uses both
ds2 was named pretty much by dh, i didn't mind as had no better contributions, i liked the first name anyway. i wanted a crazy second name again, but dh got a bit maudlin and asked if he cou;d use his second name as his mum had given it to him (she is dead now btw)
how could i refuse?
so now i have a very funny lovely ds1 name and an incredibly sombre ds2 name
i want to add the ds1 second name to ds2 too, and make it a family tradition, but think i sound a bit mad
now did you understand any of that??

starlover · 12/11/2005 22:40

ooh noops i wanna know your ds's names now!

Rhubarb · 12/11/2005 22:42

Hello!

MrsSpoon · 12/11/2005 22:49

Virgil , not so odd Cod?

Sorry just had to add this as this guy's name was the butt of a few jokes in one office I worked in.

noops · 12/11/2005 22:50

starlover, i#ll cat you.
i love ds1 name, it really is him, he's a cheeky monkey.
but ds2 ids such a smiley boy that it seems sad that he sounds so sensible in comparison.
when they grow up, i'm not sure which one will feel hard done by, the one with the slly names or the one with the sensible names
oh, do you know what i don't care, not sure who knows me here naywya- probably nobody from rl and even if they do- so what
ds1 is daniel dexter (danny d or danny dexter)
ds2 is james ashley (jamie dexter to me atm!)

Should add my opinion on Aloha's dilema whilst here. I think if you've told DS that you have given DD Edie as a middle name then if possible you should add it, especially as you are happy and like the name.

Rhubarb · 12/11/2005 22:52

HELLO!

noops · 12/11/2005 22:52

hi to you roobob

aloha · 12/11/2005 22:54

Er, hello, rhubarb...

noops · 12/11/2005 22:58

somebody get her some coffee before she stumbles on a thread that she can have a fight on
well, this si mn, any thread can end up like that!

Sidonie · 12/11/2005 23:54

I wouldn't change it. Edie can be his special name for her. It is also the name of a Desperate Housewife.

Charlee · 13/11/2005 01:14

we did this with ds, his name is Jack Christian surname, and it wasnt untill we got back from the registery office that my beloved dying grandfather said it was his wish to have his first great grandson named Charles after his father so we added it in as a middle name for him. so now we have Jack Christian Charles surname. its all ok

likklemum · 13/11/2005 01:58

Noops. I love both your children's names. I dont think either will feel hard done by. Neither of the names are embarresing and actually, IMO, I think they go well together.
DP's sister was going to be called Aleisha, but DP kicked off (he was 7) and insisted on Sally after Aunt Sally who he fancied on Worzel Gumage!!! Needless to say, she is not impressed to this day!

Enid · 13/11/2005 12:25

I don't love my children thats why I can behave in this heartless way. God its so freeing
