I honestly think the Queen sticks a pin in the map and says "Thet one"

I think its cos it sounds nice, Duke of Northampton sounds abit crap Grin

Nowadays, they choose from older titles that have become extinct.

There must be some historic reason why some places have Dukedoms, but not others (probably the actual location of a warlord from ages ago, but that wouldn't explain why eg the seat of the Duke of Rutland isn't in Rutland). And some, like Clarence or Albany) aren't even places.

You need somewhere that has a vacant Dukedom I think. So there has been one but now isn't. Hopefully someone who knows more about it will say how it actually happens Grin.

Here is what Wikipedia has to say.

Didn't realise that it had been a possibility for Prince Edward but that he (supposedly?) watched Shakespeare in Love and asked to be Earl of Wessex.

Wonder why there are some Dukes and some Earls. Does anywhere get both .

PureBloodMuggle · 30/04/2011 18:22

Right so they exist already!

No clue about what the difference between Dukes and Earls are either!! Not even sure what it means to have the title either

Giles Brandreth said that Queenie has a list of available titles. Apparently when Phillip carks it, his titles will go back in the cupboard and she can give them to some other hanger on.

Duke was a medieval title for a warleader, like a "General" dunno what the derivation of Earl was tho...
