Anyone else have muslim inlaws? My partner is not muslim anymore, but his Pakistani parents are strict, devout muslims. I am the first non asian to join the family, (his 4 siblings all married asian partners) and the culture shock is immense. I am feeling very much 'at sea', and would love to hear from anyone who has a similar situation, or any Pakistani Muslim mums, who could explain a few things to me.

Hi as much as this might seem a strange thing to say but because your partner has decided not to follow his muslim culture does not mean he is not a muslim he may not be a devout muslim but (he is by birth).

Have you asked your partner about certain things within his culture that might help you to understand it. He doesn't have to follow the culture to help you. I know a lot of muslim families and parents and one of the biggest things muslim in-laws should be shown is respect , and respect for thier culture, respect in a muslim family goes a long way and they will respect you in return. I am not muslim I am english but 75% of the friendliest and welcoming families are muslim in the last 2 years i and my children (4) have been invited and attended 14 muslim weddings and 16 birthday celebrations and it was the parents of the couples and children who invited myself and my children. The best thing i could suggest is be patient you are not going to understand everything (even I don't) still. Just be yourself. This may or may not help you but it might point you in the right direction.

So. I’m engaged to a Muslim man and don’t convert. Ever. So his family is devout and overbearing. My fiancé is fine w me not converting. He doesn’t practice jus doesn’t eat pork. But I worry when his parents learn I won’t become Muslim what to expect.
