Is it walking distance from the town centre?

It's down by the docks, just along from the ferry terminal to the isle of wight. It is within walking distance, but not a short walk. About 15 minutes from the town centre, I would say. There's the free bus that goes down to the ferry terminal. It runs every ten minutes, from the train station, up the the Marlands, along to West Quay and then down to the ferry. Mayflower park is a short walk to the right of that.

Brill thanks RP - yep going there tomorrow night but couldn't find directions anywhere!! I think I know roughly where you mean - me and dd walked down from the bargate (The old arch thing?!) and walked straight til we got to the ferries - took us about 5 10 mins - is that the general direction?

Yes, that's right. And then when you've reached the water, you turn right. Have fun! It get's really busy I think. . .
